The Japanese Beetle! #01: In The Beginning

Story Guide

Character Bios

Character Guide: Bystanders

The Cartoonist
my favorite Betsy Byars book

History: The Cartoonist was introduced to a hidden world of action and intrigue by the Thornton-Mellon University housing office, which made him the roommate of Ken Watanabe, the Japanese Beetle. The two became fast friends, and soon moved into an off-campus apartment in Thanatos Towers. When he's not attending classes, the Cartoonist is chronicles the adventures of his roommate in a daily comic strip. There are times when he even becomes involved in the Beetle's adventures, though he prefers the safety of academia, where he can be found scheduling "cram sessions" with his female classmates.

Distinguishing Features: None.

Powers: On occasion, The Cartoonist has demonstrated the awesome power to make anything happen in any given panel of the comic strip. He rarely uses this power to alter the course of events, however, as his omnipotentence isn't nearly as impressive as his all-consuming apathy.

George Gorge
walks, talks with the animals

History: George Gorge is an employee of the United States Park Service, who lives in Thanatos Towers. George's everyday routine is fairly normal - rescuing badgers from evil poachers, fighting forest fires caused by careless campers, ransoming kidnapped woodchucks - though on occasion he has been caught up in the strange adventures of the Japanese Beetle. On one occasion, he led the beetle into the woods only to be viciously savaged by a wolverine, drugged by hallucinogenic berries, and threatened by the Flying Squirrel. In revenge, George purchased the Squirrel's woodland home and turned it into Asphalt National Park. His revenge backfired, however, when the Squirrel found some skeletons in George's closet and made himself George's roommate in return for his silence.

Distinguishing Features: George Gorge is inked with a brush.

Powers: None.
