TONY'S ONLINE TIPS
for Friday, October 12, 2007

Andy Millman

THE 59TH PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS were awarded on Sunday, September 16, in Los Angeles. Every year, prior to the ceremony, we ask our TONY POLLS voters to pick their favorites in over two dozen categories. In yesterday's TOT, we ran results from nine categories and compared them to the actual winners of those awards. The Tony Polls voters are currently 3-for-9 while yours truly is 1-for-9. Let's see how it goes from here.

Of these nominees, who is your choice for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series?

Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy [30 Rock].....28.24%
Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk [Monk].....25.88%
Steve Carell as Michael Scott [The Office].....24.71%
Ricky Gervais as Andy Millman [Extras].....10.59%
Charlie Sheen as Charlie Harper [Two And A Half Men].....10.59%

I voted for ALEC BALDWIN, but the actual award went to RICKY GERVAIS. That makes you 3-for-10 and me 1-for-10.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House [House].....40.24%
James Spader as Alan Shore [Boston Legal].....19.51%
James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano [The Sopranos].....14.63%
Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer [24].....13.41%
Denis Leary as Tommy Gavin [Rescue Me].....12.20%

I voted for DENIS LEARY, even though his character and several other characters became too unlikeable for me to continue watching his show. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences members gave the Emmy to JAMES SPADER. You're 3-for-11, I'm 1-for-11, and, if this keeps up, we're going to have to repeat our Emmy Awards voting in summer school.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

Tina Fey as Liz Lemon [30 Rock].....46.97%
America Ferrera as Betty Suarez [Ugly Betty].....18.18%
MaryLouise Parker as Nancy Botwin [Weeds].....13.64%
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Christine Campbell [New Adventures Of Old Christine].....12.12%
Felicity Huffman as Lynette Scavo [Desperate Housewives].....9.09%

I also voted for TINA FEY, but the Emmy Award went, instead, to AMERICA FERRERA. You're 3-for-12; I'm 1-for-12.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

Mariska Hargitay as Detective Olivia Benson [Law & Order: Special Victims Unit].....23.81%
Kyra Sedgwick as Dep. Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson [The Closer].....20.63%
Edie Falco as Carmela Soprano [The Sopranos].....15.87%
Patricia Arquette as Allison Dubois [Medium].....14.29%
Minnie Driver as Dahlia Malloy [The Riches].....14.29%
Sally Field as Nora Walker [Brothers & Sisters].....11.11%

I voted for MARISKA HARGITAY, even though I was disappointed at how her character and that of co-star Chris Meloni pushed their supporting players into the background last season. The award went to SALLY FIELD, who, by expressing how any loving mother must feel about war, got censored by the network [Fox]. You're 3-for-13; I'm 1-for-13. Maybe we should take extra voting practice.

Outstanding Nonfiction Series

Planet Earth (Discovery Channel).....32.79%
Biography (A&E).....22.95%
American Masters (PBS).....16.39%
Deadliest Catch (Discovery Channel).....16.39%
Inside The Actors Studio (Bravo).....11.48%

I don't watch it often, but I voted for BIOGRAPHY. The award went to PLANET EARTH, making you 4-for-14.

Outstanding Individual Performance In A Variety Or Music Program

Stephen Colbert [The Colbert Report].....30.30%
Jon Stewart [The Daily Show With Jon Stewart].....30.30%

David Letterman [Late Show With David Letterman].....15.15%
Tony Bennett [Tony Bennett: An American Classic].....13.64%
Ellen Degeneres [79th Annual Academy Awards].....10.61%

I enjoy The Daily Show With Jon Stewart a bit more than I enjoy The Colbert Report, but I voted for STEPHEN COLBERT because he has to keep in character for his entire show and Stewart can, more or less, be himself. The actual award went to American classic TONY BENNETT. You're 4-for-15.

Outstanding Reality Program

Penn & Teller: Bullshit! (Showtime).....43.86%
Antiques Roadshow (PBS).....24.56%
Kathy Griffin: My Life On The DList (Bravo).....19.30%
Extreme Makeover Home Edition (ABC).....7.02%
Dog Whisperer With Cesar Millan (National Geographic).....5.26%

It can be manipulative at times, but the end result of every episode of EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION is that something really terrific is done for people in need. It often brings little man-tears to my eyes and that's why I voted for it. On the other hand, I sort of like that the actual Emmy went to KATHY GRIFFIN: MY LIFE ON THE DLIST...though I don't see how anything involving Hollywood can be considered reality. You're 4-for-16.

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program

The Amazing Race (CBS).....52.08%
Top Chef (Bravo).....18.75%
Project Runway (Bravo).....12.50%
American Idol (Fox).....10.42%
Dancing With The Stars (ABC).....6.25%

I've only watched each of these shows once, but the one that best held my interest was AMERICAN IDOL, probably because I watched a tryout episode with its army of delusional would-be performers. That most people have little concept of how bad they might be at something is as real as it gets. The Emmy went to THE AMAZING RACE, which lifts your score to 5-for-17. At least my paltry 1-for-17 makes you look good.

We have nine more categories to go and I'll be bringing them to you in the next edition of this column. Thanks for spending a part of your day with me. I'll be back soon.

THE "TONY" SCALE

Zero Tonys
ZERO: Burn your money before buying any comic receiving this rating. It doesn't *necessarily* mean there's absolutely nothing of value here - though it *could* - but whatever value it might possess shrinks into insignificance before its overall awfulness.

Tony
ONE: Buy something else. Maybe I found something which wasn't completely dreadful in the item, but not enough for me to recommend it when there are better comics available. I only want what's best for you, my children.

TonyTony
TWO: Basic judgment call. I found some value, but not enough to recommend it. My review should give you enough info to decide if you want to take a chance on it. Are you feeling lucky today, punk? Well, are you?

TonyTonyTony
THREE: This denotes something I find perfectly respectable. There are better books out there, but I wouldn't regret buying this item. Based on my review, you should be able to determine if it's of interest to you. Let the Force guide you.

TonyTonyTonyTony
FOUR: I recommend anything earning this rating. Unless you don't like the genre, subject matter, or past work of the creators, I believe you'll enjoy this item. Isn't it uncanny how I can look right into your soul that way?

TonyTonyTonyTonyTony
FIVE: Anything getting this rating is among the best comicdom has to offer. You should buy/read this, even if the genre/subject matter doesn't appeal to you. It's for your own good. Me, I live for comics and books this good...but not in a pathetic "Comic-Book Guy" sort of way.
