Before I saw the movie I knew a little about Victoria and Albert, then afterwards I went back and read my history book on the Royals and was pleasently surprised as to how accurate the movie was...the only differance between the book and the movie that I noticed was that Victoria did not like her children very much even though she loved Albert...then as they got older she became fond of them...one... more

| | 4. King Lear |
| Starring: Barbara Flynn; Ian Holm; Amanda Redman; Paul Rhys; David Lyon; Victoria Hamilton; Adrian Irvine; Michael Simkins; Finbar Lynch Directed By: Richard Eyre September 28, 2004
One school of cinema says you start a scene in the middle and end it before the action ends. This we see here. Shakespeare snipped.
I hope and pray the coming Pacino production respects the text, and uses the Quarto written for the King's original Saint Stephen's Day production, not the naked later Folio version edited for groundlings and a later censorious King who did not like astrology... more

| | 5. Wide Sargasso Sea |
| Starring: Rafe Spall, Rebecca Hall, Nina Sosanya, Victoria Hamilton, Fraser Ayres Directed By: Brendan Maher June 24, 2008
Wide Sargasso Sea is one of the best books I've ever read, but the movie does not even compare. In fact, if you haven't read the novel, I think this film would be really confusing because key parts are left out. I cannot believe that there is no filming of Antoinette's childhood, or the plantation fire, or her time in the convent. All of this is left out - the only mention of it is when Antoinette... more

| | 7. Persuasion [VHS] |
| Starring: Amanda Root, CiarĂ¡n Hinds, Susan Fleetwood, Corin Redgrave, Fiona Shaw Directed By: Roger Michell November 12, 1996
The romance, of course, is the main thing, and as usual in a Jane Austen novel, good triumphs!
There was so much else to enjoy in Persuasion, particularly the contrast between characters who were interested only in money, prestige, and appearance and those who were more "clever" and thoughtful.
Great moments for me included when Ann's father, who had mirrors placed... more

I'm such a fan of this story, especially as it appears on film in the 3 incarnations I've viewed so far. The 1939 version, starring Robert Donat and the beautiful Greer Garson is poignant and will always hold a dear place in my heart, mainly because it was the first version I watched. The 1969 musical version starring Peter O'Toole and the cheeky Petula Clark is SO 60s, but SO good. They are perfect... more
