Amazon.com: The combination of Prokofiev's masterful score with Rudolf Nureyev's choreography for the ballet company of the Paris Opera could hardly make this Romeo and Juliet anything but a success. However, as it's Nureyev, God is in the details, and while the sheer exuberance of Manuel Legris and Monique Loudieres in the leading roles is undeniable, it's the little things that count, such as Romeo's shyness as he shuffles from one foot to another in the presence of the object of his affections (it's one thing to do dying swans and amorous raptures, but not everyone can effectively choreograph a fidget). The production is visually stunning, although there's an overstatement in the glary lighting that can take one aback somewhat. --Roger Thomas, Amazon.co.uk
Farcical Fun This staging of "LfTO" is spare and modernistic, with minimal (but often inventive) sets and costumes, but the singing is first-rate and Nagano's conducting makes for an excellent handling of the music. The cast is young and vibrant (and even a bit sexy!) and the camera work helps keep you involved. A must if you are a Prokofiev fan; but it might be an eye-roller for someone looking for more traditional opera.
Wow Amazing. Over-arching power and detail, not only in the main roles but everyone who is on stage all the time. Worth the search.
Eh...not my favorite. I was actually kind of surprised....I wasn't really expecting how different this was going to be. To put it quite plainly, porcelein dolls scare the living heck out of me, so it's not my cup of tea. I'm more prone to the classical ballet scene...but I suppose that is just me. Really good on most terms, but on terms of the freakiness, I'll have to give it a 10...
complete but... less brilliant than the French version, Gergev is not always a great deal.

subtitles missing There is no way to turn the subtitles on and I have bought 2 DVDs at this point and neither of them have working subtitles. Outside of that is a suberb performance. No company is better than Opera Lyon's at this type of production.
