From Stephen Colbert, the host of television's highest-rated punditry show The Colbert Report, comes the book to fill the other 23¿ hours of your day. I Am America (And So Can You!) contains all of the opinions that Stephen doesn't have time to shoehorn into his nightly broadcast.
Dictated directly into a microcassette recorder over a three-day weekend, this book contains Stephen's most deeply held knee-jerk beliefs on The American Family, Race, Religion, Sex, Sports, and many more topics, conveniently arranged in chapter form.
Always controversial and outspoken, Stephen addresses why Hollywood is destroying America by inches, why evolution is a fraud, and why the elderly should be harnessed to millstones.
You may not agree with everything Stephen says, but at the very least, you'll understand that your differing opinion is wrong.
I Am America (And So Can You!) showcases Stephen Colbert at his most eloquent and impassioned. He is an unrelenting fighter for the soul of America, and in this book he fights the good fight for the traditional values that have served this country so well for so long.
buy stewart instead ^ I would buy "America the Book" by John Stewart instead. This one is fine, not great.
A great, funny read ^ Hank Johnson's Book Review of I Am America (And So Can You!) Stephen Colbert's I Am America (And So Can You!) was released three years ago, in 2007, and it put Stephen Colbert on the map as a professional comedian and made him a household name. Today he could be considered one of the funniest and most unique comedians ever. His humor is offbeat and hilarious, and he is admired by many. His book will be an instant hit among diehard Colbert fans, as every sentence is pure Colbert. It's amazing how deep fake opinions can be. The book spreads across many different topics, such as Sports, Religion, and the American family. His opinions can go on, and even get a bit boring, but this is a minor complaint compared to the genius of his writing. The fact that the book does not bash any current political figures is good and bad, as you feel that the book could have contained more in the area of Colbert's expertise, but it also increases the timelessness of the book. The best parts of the book are the parts on The American Family, the Media, and the American classes. I thought that some of the parts of the book could have been more thoughtful and funny and way longer than they were. This is an issue that many will not notice, but some Colbert fans may even be disappointed with these sections. For any of you who have seen his show, the humor is exactly the same. At the beginning of the book, Colbert states that he did not in fact write the book, but "screamed it into a microphone in a fit of rage." Colbert seems to be the bad stereotype of an all-American maverick. But this is exactly his humor. I have met some who do not "get" the humor of The Colbert Roport, so if you are one of those people, this book is not for you. So, the book will be good for some and not that good for others. But before I end the review, I want to ask a question. Have you ever laughed out loud several times while reading a book? If you haven't, and you're a fan of Colbert's, then this is the one. Rating: 4/5 Stars
I am really not sure how to describe this book to anyone who doesn't already know Stephen Colbert, or what his book actually includes. I've attempted to begin this review five different ways, and am finding that I just can't adequately describe it. On his show "The Colbert Report" Stephen Colbert satirizes the Conservative Right through his portrayal of an ultra-conservative reporter, and his book I Am America utilizes the same character and force to represent that satire in printed form. Like "The Colbert Report", the bestseller "attacks" everything from education to gay marriage to race in such a way that highlights what Colbert (and writing team) undoubtedly see as the ludicrous agenda of specific political parties.
I have always enjoyed watching Colbert's show on Comedy Central, and have intended to read his book since it was first published. Of course, like many of the books in my "to be read" stack, the reading actually took place long after it first hit my radar. From my perspective, the level of entertainment of Colbert's book is equal to that of his show, but I gained a new appreciation for the 30-minute increments. After reading the first 100+ pages straight through I found the writing style to be a bit tedious. In hindsight, I believe I would have enjoyed the book more if I took it a chapter or two at a time as opposed to plowing through in two sittings.
But I'm a sucker for footnotes and side notes, and that alone makes the book worth reading.
Funniest in small doses ^ I'm not a huge Colbert fan - but do watch him on occasion and The Colbert Report does indeed crack me up. I Am America (And So Can You!) is classic Stephen Colbert and did leave me laughing, but I could only read it in small doses. I do enjoy his humor but found the book was best by reading "here and there" versus reading cover to cover. About 25 pages in the humor gets a bit old, so it was more refreshing to read just a bit at a time. For those that like The Colbert Report and his schtick - you'll probably like this book. For those that don't like Colbert - you won't like his book either...
Bravo Stephen Colbert ^ Stephen Colbert has again shown his comic genius in this hilarious book. Couldn't stop reading it from cover to cover, no problem with the lack of sleep. Stephen's book nourishes the mind, body and soul. Now I'm going to loan it to my mother--DON'T TELL STEPHEN!!!!!
