Product Description: Mike Chip and Larry are three lusty brawling U. S. Cavalry sergeants stationed in Indian Territory in 1870. Mike and Chip are determined to prevent Larry from carrying out his decision to leave the Army at the end of his current hitch and marry beautiful Amelia Parent. One night the three cronies befriend a trumpet-playing former slave Jonah Williams who dreams of someday becoming a trooper. A tribe of fanatical Indians begins terrorizing the area and the headstrong Chip decides to attempt the capture of their leader. Accompanied by Jonah he sneaks into the Indians' secret meeting place while they are conducting one of their mysterious rites but he is discovered and taken prisoner. Jonah however escapes and races back to tell Mike and Larry. When Larry insists upon going to Chip's rescue Mike makes him sign a reenlistment paper "just to make his help official" and promises to destroy the paper after the mission. Mike Larry and Jonah make their way to the Indian stronghold but they too end up as prisoners. As the Cavalry rides into a trap where a thousand warriors are waiting to ambush them Jonah blows the regiment's favorite tune on his trumpet as a warning. The ensuing battle ends in victory for the Cavalry; the three sergeants are decorated and Jonah is made a trooper. Thinking himself discharged Larry drives off in a buggy with Amelia but the crafty Mike shows the post's commanding officer the reenlistment paper he had promised to destroy. Amazon.com: Lurking inside this 1962 Rat Pack movie is a true film classic: 1939's buoyant Kipling adventure, Gunga Din. The plotline's about the same, but the action in Sergeants 3 is transferred from colonial India to the Old West. Our three roistering Army buddies are played by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Peter Lawford, who are assigned a tense scouting mission just about the time Lawford is ready to quit the service in favor of--horrors--marriage. Sammy Davis, Jr., assumes the Gunga Din role, as a freed slave who tags along after the sergeants in hopes of joining the Army. (Yes, he blows a bugle.) Less successfully transferred than this outline is the way the cult from Gunga Din becomes a bloodthirsty tribe of Ghost Dancers in Sergeants Three, a bit of fudged movie history that will have to be taken with a grain of salt. But it's about as believable as everything else in this movie, right down to the fake beards on the cowpokes in the opening saloon brawl. Director John Sturges, who made this movie between his commercial high points of The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, apparently had little interest in making the interiors look like anything but studio sets. The exteriors fare much better, as many were shot in Utah's Bryce Canyon. The actors look as disengaged from this material as Sturges, with oomph sneaking in only when the boys are teasing each other (notably a sequence in which stuffy officer Joey Bishop--yes, he's in here too--is tricked into swallowing a laxative). It's all pretty flat, lending credence to the idea that the movie's long delay in securing a DVD release had less to do with racial insensitivity than with sheer lameness. --Robert Horton
FINALLY~~!!!! It doesn't get any better than this especially with a first rate director like John Sturges and a super star cast that includes, Frank, Dean, Sammy, Joey, and Pete~!!!
No time for SERGEANTS As a fan of Frank & Dean and having soft spot for westerns, it wouldn't have taken much for me to drink the Kool-Aid here. Unfortunately, this is an awful movie on pretty much every level. The bad script and the disinterested performances are only surpassed by some of the laziest directing I've ever seen. That the culprit was the great John Sturges, who directed classics like THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and THE GREAT ESCAPE, is really astonishing. "Action" scenes are laughably sped up and apparently no stunt coordinator was hired for the picture since nothing else would explain some of the worst movie punches ever thrown.
Fans of the Rat Pack, don't get conned into buying a movie which does the unthinkable: makes 4 FOR TEXAS seem like a good film.
At last I saw this film the first time when I was about 20 years old. Friends asked me to join them going to this movie. When I asked what kind of movie we were going , they answered that it was with frank sinatra, dean martin and sammy davis. Oh my god I thought, it wil be a singing or some kind of musicalfilm. Not my kind of film. But they convinced me to go. What a movie !!!! Since that time I saw it about 5 times in the movietheaters.When the internet came into our lives I started a search and finally at least, after more than many, many years a hit at amazon. It made me very happy now that it is on dvd. I wil show this film to every one and hope that everybody wil feel the same kind of exitement I felt in those days. .
A log awaited release..... I've waited a long,long time for this movie to be released. I saw it when it was first released (1962) and unable to find it until now.I came accross this movie on a cable station and watched it. I logged onto to Amazon.com and found it for sale. I purchased it and watched it again. I have to admit, it was a little campy, but it was the Rat Pack in the making. If you are a fan of western movies, Martin,Davis,Sinatra,Lawford and Bishop, you have to have this in your collection...
40 years has taken it's toll Sergeants 3 This movie really had a toll on my memory. Seeing this when I was under 10yrs old was probably a good thing. It's a western and typical for the time period. However, being a fan of the Rat Pack, this was one movie I had to have. It's ashame it took all of them to die before being released to the public.
The one and only scene I remember was Sammy Davis, Jr. blowing the buggle and having the arrow stike him. Funny, I thought they were in a fort at the time. So, I guess parts of the movie stuck with me.
It's a typical western Indians vs. Cavalry but with the Gunga Din message, although I didn't get that part. Acting was good considering the era and plot was o.k. Still, it had it's funny moments and little sneekery, i.e. cutting cards with the blacksmith, "dismissed".
I thought it strange the Indians were more compasionate when it came to tossing anyone off the cliff. Did they just want Peter and Frank to witness the oncoming slaughter? Oh well.
I was still satisfied with a delightful matinee on my big screen, bringing back memories when my younger brother and I saw this way back when.
