Josh Hartnett and Melissa George are the film's de facto heroes (he's the stoic town sheriff and she's his estranged fire-marshal wife) but the picture's real MVP is Slade's camera (along with cinematographer Jo Willems), which careens across the town's snowy landscape to detail the vampires' horrific assault on its inhabitants, which are quickly pared down to a hardy few. The script, co-written by the source material's creator, Steve Niles, along with Pirates of the Caribbean's Stuart Beattie and Hard Candy's Brian Nelson), proudly wears its influences on its crimson-stained sleeve (Bram Stoker's Dracula, natch, but also Salem's Lot, Night of the Living Dead, and John Carpenter's version of The Thing) and boils down the graphic novels to a series of tense and extremely bloody standoffs between Harnett and George's band of survivors and the vaguely Slavic and ferocious bloodsuckers led by Marlow (a feral and frightening Danny Huston). And if the characters seem stock and the finale begs suspension of disbelief, the set pieces leading up to it are sufficiently supercharged with suspense and violence to please most horror fans. A Unsatisfying Thirst For More Blood.......2 3/4 stars I waited to see this film until it came out on the movie channels. Mainly because I had a feeling that it wasn't quite worth the rent. However I was impressed to see that it was not a total let down. I own the comic book that the movie originated from, and of course the comic book was way better, as they usually are. I was very grateful for the way the vampires looked, pretty much the exact duplicate of the comic. The film had some good scenes of blood and gore,(scenes of beheading are always fun). The tension was not what it should have been, there were moments. But the whole comic book was intense. The atmosphere was creepy and the writing was good. The acting was good except some times it came off a bit forced. I did enjoy the ending.
In Barrow, Alaska they have one month out of the year that it stays dark for 30 days. As darkness approaches the villagers find themselves being attacked by unknown forces. It doesn't take the town long to find out they are being hunted by blood sucking vampires. Unable to escape since the airport has been shut down until sunrise and the vampires have destroyed all connections leading outside of town, the only means of surviving is to hide and wait for 30 days of night to be over. Unfortunately the small towns people need food and supplies to last them 30 days. They have to create diversions and truck through the blizzard and freezing cold in hopes of trying to dodge the nasty, vicious creatures of the night. Who will survive and who will fall prey to the night that surrounds them?
The difference between watching a movie and reading a book(even one with pictures) is that your mind creates a much more terrible scenrio than the film could ever live up to. So most of the time when you end up watching a movie that is based on a book, you are disappointed. Because what you thought up in your mind isn't at all the same as what you just watched. I do think that if the 30 Days Of Night had been original it would have been a alot better release. Another problem of the film was the unnecessary length. All in all it wasn't a terrible watch. I recommend watching it for free.
Why so bad? I don't understand why this movie recieved poor reviews. The concept is excelent, the acting was pretty flawless, the FX were simple yet effective, and the vampires were the most ruthlessly frightening that I've seen in a very long time. The only reason I can think of as to why certain viewers did'nt like this film, is that, for once, a director wanted to step outside the box of "traditional" vamp.. movies. People are just stuck on the old style. Too bad.
Boring Vampire Movie 30 Days Of Night has an extremely interesting premise in which an Alaskan town in the midst of winter and 30 days of darkness is besieged by a horde of vampires. That's about the only interesting thing about this film. There is loads of blood and violence, but the plot is thin at best with a ridiculous ending. The acting is marginal too be kind with a very stiff performance from Josh Hartnett. One of the more annoying aspects of the film is that the lead vampire (played by Danny Huston) is the only vampire that "speaks" but the language is no more than some clicks and clucks which is subtitled. As some other reviewers have noted, the film doesn't depict the vampires as cultured fashionistas, but it goes the other direction and basically reduces them to a pack of rabid dogs.
At last, REAL vampires! In Barrow Alaska, a desolate small town, there falls a time of year where the black of night lasts for 30 days. While many flee the darkness for Anchorage, others stay behind to weather the long night. As the sun sets on our film, the sheriff is called out to investigate the brutal slaying of every available sled dog in town; a puzzling and disturbing occurrence in a small quiet town.
Night falls, and the vampires come out to play. They're ugly, deadly, and very thirsty. These are real vampires, evil and blood-driven, not the obscene domesticated vampire who wants to help humanity or the romanticized vampires of Rice and Hamilton's silly erotica novels. Their gory invasion is swift and thorough, leaving behind very few survivors. Those left must huddle together, hidden in various houses around the town as they wait for the far off dawn. The gore level escalates as the survivors discover that those bitten must be beheaded in order to keep them dead. Survival seems doubtful as the long night wears on, and the vampires just keep coming.
The best part of this movie is the vampires. I must say that they're pretty sloppy eaters, leaving lots of blood strewn about in the wake of their feasting, their mouths and clothing dripping with blood, and still gushing meals abandoned. You got to love those inky black eyes, though, and the way they keep the gore level up to entertaining levels. The survivors, however, seemed a bit wooden. Their dialogue was weak, and the characters not fully developed. This made it harder to identify with their plight. The scenes of the desolate town were adequate, but the soundtrack was also weak, not helping to build any suspense around the predicament of the survivors.
Over all, I was gratified enough by the vampires to make this an enjoyable horror flick. Recommended for fans of the old-fashioned horror-vampires, the human-cattle herders of old. Rent first before buying. Enjoy!
Don't Expect Anne Rice's Kind Of Vampires In This Movie Two words that mostly go with this movie bloody and gory extremely satisfying to those who are getting a little tired of the PG rated violent movies that Hollywood is putting out recently. The short version of the storyline is that you have a small town in Alaska that is facing a month of night time when a few miles away you have a derelict ship crewed by vampires that are on their way to the town. The first thing you will see is that these vampires act more like wolves than the vampires you usually see in the movies like Dracula or read an books like Interview With The Vampire. Along through the movie when the vampires start attacking is when the blood really starts to flow. Again unlike most of the other movies of vampires the scenes in the movie have them basically goring and almost tearing apart their victims. While this movie won't have any nudity some viewers might be looking for the violence and carnage will definitely make up for it. The one thing I also loved about this blu-ray dvd was the picture quality and audio and while I didn't get the standard dvd to compare this one with I still am amazed at the quality of this dvd. So to anyone who's looking for their dose of vampires and bloody carnage I say this one is worth it...
