Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. Remember Arrested Development? Smartest, funniest show on television. A critics' darling. An Emmy-winner for Best Comedy Series. But no one watched, and it was cancelled. Will history repeat itself with 30 Rock? It's the smartest, funniest show on television. A critics' darling. An Emmy-winner for Best Comedy Series. And it finished its inaugural season in 137th place! Hopefully, people will discover all that they missed with this Season 1 set and 30 Rock will, better late than never, find the audience it so richly deserves. A behind-the-scenes workplace comedy in the grand tradition of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show, 30 Rock stars comedy geek goddess Tina Fey as Liz Lemmon, who juggles her hapless personal life with her chaotic career as the producer and head writer of an SNL-ish sketch comedy show. She has a new boss, cunning and ruthless GE executive Jack Donaghy (Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award-winner Alec Baldwin), who insists on being her mentor, and a new star, medicated, loose-cannon comedian Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), who steals the spotlight from the show's flighty star, Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski).

Briskly paced and perfectly cast, 30 Rock rewards viewers with brilliant dialogue (when Liz asks Jack why he is dressed in a tuxedo with no formal event to attend, he coolly responds, "It's after six; what am I, a farmer?") and fresh characters you haven't seen on a hundred other sitcoms. Jack McBrayer is the series' scene-stealing breakout star as NBC page Kenneth, a sweet and innocent "rube." The ensemble's seemingly spontaneous byplay invites repeat viewings to catch jokes and sly bits of business you might have missed (in "Tracy Does Conan," listen for the initial confusion over how to pronounce Tracy's less-than-ethical physician, Dr. Spaceman, or, in "The Hair and the Head," watch for the Katie Couric slur on the wall of what is purported to be NBC anchor Brian Williams' trashed office). In a season full of gems (including "Black Tie," featuring Paul Reubens as severely inbred royalty), there are only a couple of comparative clunkers, but the pleasure of this ensemble's company more than compensates. 30 Rock is highly recommended for people like Kenneth who just love television so much. And by the hammer of Thor, watch season 2! --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars30 Rock is Incredible, and Amazon helped me get it cheap!
Amazon made the purchase of this product very easy. It was easy to find and simple to buy, which isn't what I have found on other websites. I would suggest this site to any online shopper. The 30 Rock DVD box set is incredible. The main menu gives a short excerpt of each episode making it very user friendly. The episodes also provide the running time, so the viewer knows how much time has passed and/or how much time is left. The final disc of the box set provides bloopers and unseen footage from the show, in case you didn't get enough laughs from the previous 21 episodes. Each episode shares with the viewer a very funny outlook of a comedy series that is produced by as well as acted by Tina Fey. The other main characters include, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, and Jane Krakowski. This combination is the perfect match-up on camera. Each has their own style of comedy, which makes it entertaining for every viewer. The comedy style of Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) is very sarcastic and witty, whereas the style portrayed by Tracy Morgan is mildly vulgar as his Jack Donaghy's (Alec Baldwin). Tracy Morgan plays the lead of his own show on 30 Rock. He is very much a diva throughout every episode. He expects to be pampered by those around him, and goes about it very loudly. Liz Lemon plays the producer in the show, and spends a lot of her time keeping the actors on the show at peace with one another. Jack Donaghy's role is that network executive. He doesn't like to be involved with much, and goes about getting his way rather rudely. Jack's character provides a grumpy old man style of comedy. Jane Krakowski plays Jenna Maroney. Her character ignites the show by portraying the role of a ditzy blonde. Her role brings in the laughs at her own expense. This box set was a great purchase, and if you are looking for a simple fun comedy then 30 Rock is the show for you.

3 out of 5 starsbackground music too loud ...
don't get me wrong for the 3 stars rating. this is a brilliant comedy. i just finished watching season 1 in one seating. i LOVE it. everyone in the cast is just so funny. imho, there is NO supporting cast ... all the characters support one another and the special guests, man they rock too! but i have one gripe ... what with the BACKGROUND music, they just simply drowned out the witty dialogues. come on, knock off the background music, please. i hope ms. tina fey will do something about it. you don't need the background music to boost the show ... the dialogues are brilliantly written and they should be clearly heard by all.

3 out of 5 starsNot funny at all
I bought season 1 after reading positive reviews and seeing one of the episodes on a transatlantic flight. Also I'm a big fan of Alec Baldwin.
I have to admit I was disappointed - the show is not funny at all, no good jocks, it's often boring.Smart ? Sometimes. Tina Fey is not a great actress, I'm sure she is much better at something else.I was disappointed by Baldwin too - seems like his role in this show is some extension of the ABSOLUTELY the same character he played in Will & Grace, except that this time that character didn't fit in well with other straight characters.

5 out of 5 starsHilarious
"30 Rock" is an example of the rare brilliant comedy that is not going to appeal to the masses. It's too frenetic, filled with lightning quick wit balanced with unabashed slapstick. And it makes it probably the best comedy on TV today, much more likely to induce a belly laugh than the entertaining, but more restrained, "Office." Like under-appreciated 00's comedies that preceded it ("Scrubs," "Arrested Development"), "30 Rock" and its pitch-perfect ensemble, led by Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan and Alec Baldwin, will probably shine best among a small group of devotees who don't like their comedy served in cookie-cutter fashion.

5 out of 5 stars30 rock rocks the house with laffs
Every episode is well worth the price of this dvd set. It is so easy to set down in the lounger and watch this series unfold without commercials. The best cast since Seinfeld and the laffs just keep on coming. Thank-you Tina Fey and company. I have already preordered the second season for more great tv.
