Amazon.com: Let's be honest: this 1995 epic isn't nearly as bad as its negative publicity led us to expect. At the time it was the most expensive Hollywood production in history (it had a Titanic-sized $200 million budget), and the film arrived in theaters with so much controversy and negative gossip that it was an easy target for ridicule. The movie itself, a flawed but enjoyable post-apocalypse thriller, deserves better. Waterworld stars Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a lone maverick with gills and webbed feet who navigates the endless seas of Earth after the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The Mariner has been caged like a criminal when he's freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a young girl (Tina Majorino) escape from the Smokers, a group of renegade terrorists led by Dennis Hopper in yet another memorably villainous role. It is too bad the predictable script isn't more intelligent, but as a companion piece to The Road Warrior, this seafaring stunt-fest is adequately impressive. --Jeff Shannon
Highly enjoyable flick ^ This movie might seem dated to some now 15 years after its release - really an inevitable fate for ALL movies sooner or later - but it's still a very fun movie with a serious message even if the plot/backstory of how the world became flooded is a bit exaggerated. It's interesting to see how people try to survive in this 'Waterworld', especially since there are now no longer any freshwater lakes and rivers and the world is covered by saltwater. It was cool to see the atolls, and people placing such value on items we take for granted, like dirt, or a simple bath. It does require a bit of suspension of belief - it's hard for me to believe that modern-day cigarettes might still be smokeable 1000 years from now - but who knows, with all the chemicals they put in cigs, it just might be possible :P I do wish there had been a bit more exploration of a backstory. If you like futuristic, post-apocalyptic movies, this is for you.
Awesome! ^ Costner is intense and so sexy! Again I relate to his character, the loner, the leader, the life changer. No other movie comes even close to this film except for maybe Beauty and The Beast. The creative imagination burst bright with every scene. How can anyone with any imagination not like this great classic.
Although It's Not The "Extended Cut" - It Has Stunning Clarity on "HD DVD" ^ ** A REVIEW OF THE "HD DVD" VERSION ONLY ***
Despised by critics on release and costing more than my weekly wages (I work in a second-hand record shop, therefore I'm a millionaire), "Waterworld" was nonetheless embraced as a B-movie classic by fans all over the world - both at the cinema on release - and then on DVD reissue later. But with the new format upon us, "Waterworld" is the kind of movie that virtually screams, "...will look great on Hi Def". However, I was told by someone who's in the movie business that the transfer of this film onto HD was a little "soft" - disappointing even. I'd like to concentrate on that, because I absolutely don't agree.
I've both a Blu Ray player and a Toshiba HD player and a quality HDMI interconnect for both - and I've been buying up the HD discs like mad recently because (a) they're dirt cheap (it's now a dead format) and (b) the picture quality is just fabulous.
I was astonished by the clarity on "Waterworld" on "HD" - beautifully transferred - and it automatically formats to fill the entire screen - so you get the full impact. It didn't look this good in the cinema, I can assure you. Ok, it's not the 'extended cut' that was issued in the USA and is preferred by some fans, but man does this version look good. It's clean and revelatory in almost every frame and because very little CGI was used, the sets are all real, so nothing looks dated or added on in post-production.
I haven't seen the BLU RAY version I'll admit, but if it looks this good in transfer, then I'd say buy it...or this...if you've the equipment.
PS: the best picture quality I've ever seen is on the HD disc of "Ray" - the Ray Charles story - unbelievable clarity and depth. What a shame the HD DVD format didn't make it.
Yeah, Buy It ^ This movie bombed at the box office, and all of the professional reviewers hated it.
I rented it and wanted to hate it too. But, I gotta tell you, this film grows on you.
I then bought it and have watched it at least 3 times in the past two years.
It's one of those guilty pleasures.
Just go ahead and buy it (as cheaply as you can get it).
Eco-Horror Science Fiction ^ Excellent action film of a world submerged by global warming, on the order of the "Mad Max" devastation prototypes. The film inspired a popular Universal Studios outdoor action show. It takes a long time to make a simple point, but it is worth the wait for a fan of action films. The supporting cast and extras are terrific.
