Horatio Hornblower Collector's Edition Awesome miniseries. Ioan Gruffud is exceptional. Also, enjoy Robert Lindsay in a dramatic performance. Good quality dvd. You will want to watch it again and again.
Great Series This series is excellent. Each volume is extremely entertaining and well thought out. The stories are engaging and definitely hard to walk away from between volumes. Ioan Gruffudd does an amazing job at presenting his character in every aspect. This is one of the best series I've owned, and definitely worth the money. I grew up watching the Gregory Peck version of Captain Horatio Hornblower, and had some big expectations stemming from that great production. Although a bit different in storyline and length, this series answered every expectation. With each volume being approximately 100 minutes, you will want to spend a whole day watching the entire series straight through. There are also some great history extras describing life in the navy and other interesting facts.
Horatio Hornblower Collector's Edition WE thouroughly enjoyed Horatio! We couldn't wait to see each episode. We even took it on vacaation! We wish there were more!
Character and Leadership The two new adventures are excellent! This is a great series for younger folks! The Hornblower series provide example after example of Leadership, Character and Courage! Each adventure is as good as the last, holding the viewer attention from beginning to end!
Fantastic Adventures on the High Seas I did not discover C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower until I was an adult, when I consumed all eleven books in a few short weeks. The letdown after I had finished was, of course, intolerable. So I thought I would try the A&E DVD version, the Horatio Hornblower Collector's Edition, wondering if any visual medium could in any way come close to the fantastic imagery of Forester's eighteenth century world.
I sat down with the family, and we devoured this DVD collection. I could not have asked for a better realized film version of these books. Ioan Gruffudd captured all of the uncertainty and modesty of young Hornblower as he was thrust into one situation after another. Robert Lindsay(II) was a generous and paternal Admiral Pellew. The rest of the crew, the sea battles and the land excursions fell neatly into my recollection and visual imaginations from my reading experience.
My only regret is that this DVD collection ended after the first four books of the eleven in the complete series. I ended up wanting more, and more, and more...
