must have for gamers ^ one of the standards, gotta have it if you like shooting things and being attacked by creatures
five stars for graphics and combat,BUT? ^ i have played the original quake and quake II, and even doom III. nothing compares to quake 4's graphics and intense game play. i very much like the ability to man a 'walker' and a 'hover tank' the most enjoyable part of Q4 in my humble opinion is the tram rail. where you man a machine gun in the rear of the tram and as it races across strogg territory you have to defend the tram against flyers and other trams trying to stop you. the game has two parts to it. one is your Matthiew Kane solider conducting mission on the strogg home planet. kane eventually gets captured on one of his missions by the Makron. this capture is unavoidable and is part of the story line and cannot be changed, he is then turned into a strogg solider by strogg assembly line means. Kane is eventually freed when rhino squad captures a strogg medical facility and continues his missions against the strogg forces as a strogg. the missions are very short, the game is very short, which is one of the little things that i don't like about it. the second thing i dislike about about it is the interaction between Kane and the other marines. some just stand there and have nothing to say when you approach them, while others simply say "corporal i'm a little busy at the moment" or "cant talk right now" if your a doom 3 player, the characters in doom 3 have plenty to say. the story line in doom 3 is a bit stale but the action is intense, and some of the scenes in doom 3 are very gory. after several brief missions kane confronts the new makron in the nexus core. this time the makron has to be killed twice as anyone playing the game will know. killing the makron doesn't end the game you must destroy the nexus core which looks like a gigantic internal organ. i must advise anyone who plays quake 4 for the first time the scenes are a bit horrific in nature. for a game it looks incredibly realistic, not cartoonish and robotic like quake 2. i give this game my rating of five stars for intense game play and stunningly realistic graphics. for the best most fluent gameplay i play quake 4 on my gateway 64bit dual core computer. but the game ran just fine with no problems on my older 2ghz dual core notebook with only 2gbs of ram. at the end of the game the marines congratulate kane on destroying the nexus, but then the colonel turns to kane and says "kane you have new orders" which means there is some hope of the quake legacy continuing
An Excellent Video Game for hard core gamers! ^ This is one intense video game. And what's best, it runs natively in Linux.
I'm running it in Ubuntu 8.04 with the older 169 nvidea drivers. Online gaming is pretty good and the solo player is very well done. I was deciding if I should wait for UT3 but figured it will never come. So here we are and it's been a blast :D
Solid entertainment and boredom cure ^ I'm a Quake player since version 1 on Pentium 1. Its a solid game, love it and it doesn't take much extra gear to add to your preexisting PC system. I've only had to add a gfx card which is probably included to new systems anyway. I'm a bit disappointed that the programmers moved away from floating pentagrams (which is how you'd get ammo or health in the old version.. buy running through them) but I guess the seperation of church and state was multilateral. And my voice was getting sore from chanting. This is futurist military combat only; They did a great job for the theme. I don't know much about online gaming performance though,
Quake 4 Addiction ^ This game rocks! the AI are smart and I mean very smart...Sure sometimes you get like two Strogg in a narrow hallway that are easy to pick off but 95 Percent of the time these AI are dodging, rolling, Jumping, coming through the floors and sometimes even the ceiling and their attacks hurt like heck even if its a minor Strogg Unit; So yea this game is VERY CHALLENGING and Hard and the AI will mess you Up horribly if your not smart.
The Graphics are amazing clear, crisp and beautiful (espically the blood and models)
The Story is enthralling and motivating and even scary and it has a few great plot twists along the way.
I just came from playing this game 2 hours straight...so yea..im addicted.
