Amazon.com essential video: Director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) clearly set out to make an old-fashioned Western, but he couldn't help bringing a hip, self-conscious attitude to the proceedings. Silverado thus finds its own funky tone--sometimes rousing, sometimes winking. Four cowpokes converge on a little Western burg called Silverado; they're played by Kevin Kline (a distinctly modern kind of Western hero), Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and the rowdy young Kevin Costner. Kasdan peppers the somewhat generic action with smart dialogue and a parade of quirky supporting players, including John Cleese as a sheriff who seems to have stepped straight from a Monty Python sketch into an Old West saloon. Bruce Broughton supplies the music, a real throwback to the glory days of thundering Western themes. One thing's for sure: Silverado's a lot more fun than the later Kasdan-Costner Western, Wyatt Earp. --Robert Horton
Larry's over-the top Western This film was released in the same year as Eastwood's "Pale Rider" and was supposed to signal a renewal of the Western genre. It barely succeeds because of Kasden's writing and direction, "Silverado" is totally lacking in a central character with too many subplots and no central theme like "Rider" which has held pretty well over the years (I, myself, still prefer "The Outlaw Josey Wales")--it's like a Western on steroids. There is plenty of action here, but hardly no full bodied characterizations here like Brian Denehy's villain could have been better developed but only emerges as a one note bad guy in the writing. You may as well have been seeing Indiana Jones in his cowboy gear for all I care since Kasden doesn't know when to stop . In fact none of the characters in this film are particularly memorable except perhaps Kevin Kline and Ms Hunt as the diminutive bar keeper who Kline takes a liking to but even their characters seem paper thin here too!! I don't blame Costner either for his ridiculous portrayal of the Kid since he much preferred to play Scott Glenn's character instead--again blame it on Kasden. Entertaining, but instantly forgettable like a Big Mac!!
Wide Screen Love westerns. Silverado is a great movie,my wife watched this movie and she does not watch westerns but this one had a good story and plot.We do not care for wide screen movies and do not buy or rent them. Wished this one came in full screen.
Silverado Silverado is a good action packed western. You also get a good dose of fun, laughter, adverture, and a good story. The actors mesh very well to give you great entertainment. You get all this, and a happy ending. If you like westerns, you will enjoy Silverado. Buy it and enjoy it as often as you like. I did, and I do. So can you.
Silverado DVD Besides being a great movie with staying power, the special gift set packaging on this set is surprising and fresh. Buy it and you'll see....
Great fun! Great gun fights! Great humor! The all-star cast makes for an interesting mix, and the Kasdan brothers did a good job of taking every aspect of the typical Western without going over the top.
