Amazon.com Product Description:
Versatile, compact, and easy to use, the Uniden BC72XLT handheld scanner offers a simple way to monitor the "action" bands, including police and fire channels (including rescue and paramedics), NOAA weather transmissions, business and industrial radio broadcasts, utilities, marine and amateur (ham radio) bands, air bands, and more. In short, the scanner keeps interested parties in the information loop. Of course, scanning the 32,000 available frequencies can be time-consuming and frustrating, which is why Uniden added such functions as Close Call capture technology, which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters to help you detect and identify local signals, and a comprehensive memory that holds up to 100 programmed channels (10 per bank).

The scanner also offers six preset service banks, with preset frequencies for police, fire/emergency, aircraft, ham, marine, and weather, making it easy to locate specific types of calls. And should you want to regularly monitor a few specific channels, you can designate them as "priority" channels. The BC72XLT will then check those channels every two seconds while it scans each bank, so you never miss an important transmission. Other scanning functions include 10 programmable search ranges for finding unlisted frequencies in your area and a two-second scan delay that lets you hear any replies to the original transmission before moving on.

A scanner is fairly useless if you can't decipher the transmission, which is why the BC72XLT is outfitted with triple-conversion circuitry. The technology virtually eliminates any interference from IF images and clarifies the selected frequency, so you needn't strain to pick up certain words or phrases. And thanks to the key lock, you won't accidentally change the programming while carrying the scanner in your pocket. Add in a memory backup that preserves stored frequencies even if the scanner loses power and an easy-to-read, backlit display and you're ready for virtually any scanning situation.

The scanner comes with a flexible antenna with a BNC connector, ensuring adequate reception in strong signal areas (a separately sold external antenna will further improve reception), along with an AC adapter. As an alternative, you can power the scanner using two AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries (the latter can even be recharged while in the scanner). The unit measures 2.75 by 4.5 by 1.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box
Scanner, AC adapter, flexible antenna, belt clip, frequency guide, user's manual.

5 out of 5 stars"Rock Solid" In Oregon
I researched scanners for a week. And I live in Grants Pass,Oregon , About 50,ooo people, so I guessed right,no trunking devices. The Bearcat72xlt was a perfect choice. I downloaded the manual so it would be letter size. punched holes in it and put it in a binder. It was 63 pages long and gave perfect instructions what to do.I also downloaded the frequencys with no problem for my county. I live in Mountains and hilly country and programing was 10 times easyer than my mp3 player. I only installed 10 Frquencys in a 100 channel scanner. All are very clear!! My first scanner was in 1977 and was a crystal 8 channel scanner. This is my second and get ni-mh batterys. Do not pick this one for Nascar, It is the 4th from the top rated by Uniden..... Perfect choice For my needs!!!It has way more feauters than I need. I highly recomend this scanner!!!!!!

4 out of 5 starsGreat Scanner!!
This is a great scanner...very easy to use and has excellent reception an range. With heavy use, battery life is about 5 days. The Close Call Technology with this product works great! An all around excellent product from uniden! 100%!

4 out of 5 starsOK little scanner for the price.
This is not a bad little scanner for the price. The only problem that I see with it is that the speaker is very small so the sound you get from it is not very loud. But it serves my purpose well, living in fire country in the Sierra Nevada Mts. of California.

4 out of 5 starsBetter than expected
I bought this as a gift for my dad for Father's Day-he needed a new scanner for the Nascar races we go to each year.
I think it's almost better than the one he gave me!
We haven't used it yet - next race isn't until Labor Day weekend, but just by testing it out, it seems like a great scanner. It's sleek and easy to carry around, and if you don't have earphones, the speaker on the scanner itself works really well.
Great product for a great price!

4 out of 5 starsNot a bad scanner for the price
I researched this Uniden BC72XLT before I purchased it. I read all of the reviews. I was worried about buying it when I read some of them. I bought it anyway and am glad that I did. It is easy to program and compact in size. I have had no problem with it picking up stations, even 15 to 20 miles away. I use it for police, fire and railroad mostly and am very pleased with it. For the folks who complain that it will not pick up police and fire, it is probably because the signals in their area are trunked and you need a special scanner to listen to that.

I am disappointed with the fact that it eats batteries. I use the land charger at home and purchased a 12 volt charger when using it in the car. Radio Shack handled this scanner sold under their name for a few years. It sold for about $79.00 about the same as this one. Today their scanners sell for a lot more and have less features than this one. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a pocket scanner and don't want to invest a lot of money in one.
