Amazon.com: Matrix writer-directors Larry and Andy Wachowski commissioned seven artists from Japan, America and Korea to make nine short films set in the world of their feature trilogy. Some of the top anime directors contributed to this anthology, including Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll), Koji Morimoto (Robot Carnival), and Shinchiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop). Some of the films tie directly into the narrative of the live-action movies. Drawn in a style reminiscent of Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Mahiro Maeda's The Second Renaissance (Part I & Part II) depicts the human-machine wars that caused the enslavement of humanity and the creation of the Matrix. The duel between two flamboyantly costumed Kabuki warriors in Kawajiri's Program is an expanded version of the cybernetic training Neo (Keanu Reeves) undergoes in the first Matrix film. Watanabe evokes the look of old newspaper photographs in A Detective Story, which falls outside the storyline of the features. Fast-paced, violent and grim, The Animatrix is an uneven but intriguing compilation that represents a new level in the ongoing cross-pollination between Japanese animation and American live action. (Not rated, suitable for ages 16 and older: considerable violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon
Anime Fused With The Matrix There is no comparison to the Matrix Trilogy... Until... The Animatrix was released!
This DVD includes 9 unreleased titles made buy the guys that brought you The Matrix!
Each short film has it's own story and style. They still follow, to some extent, the idea that The Matrix was based off of.
When can we say there's TOO MUCH technology? So far, I like where we're heading, it brought me this movie... But maybe some day we will reach the point where our world is run by it...
The Animatrix Gift Set (includes soundtrack) This animation is a mini series of different views of the Matrix. The series are like various examples of how the Matrix function. It could be interesting for the animation and matrix lovers. However i do prefer a single movie rather than short different series.
a good start. this animated movie didnt add up to my expectations. seems to me at times it let way off the matrix series and wanted to prove to be better. i would have loved to see just a animated version of all matrix movies rolled into this movie. but i expected too much i guess
BEAUTIFUL Personally, I didn't really like the movie The Matrix, so I was skeptical when I heard about this collection of short films. The idea behind The Matrix always appealed to me, but other than that, I didn't enjoy it. But when I saw the Animatrix the first time, I was hooked. It's a collection of beautifully animated (and computer animated) shorts that are based on the idea behind The Matrix. Each short is independent of the other (except for one that has two parts) and they are all amazing. You have to see it for yourself. Don't watch this with expectations, and make sure you pay attention. I would say this DVD is probably best for ages 15 and up.
Wonderful and strange... Animatrix is a dream for people who love science fiction, cyber punk and post-cyber punk. Wonderful stories, great art work, good character design and loads of extras on the DVD. 9 short films exploring the incredible possibilities within the Matrix setting. Being a fan of Ghost in the Shell and hard science fiction this was a real treat. I also happen to enjoy the idea of robots and artificial intelligence and found the Second Renaissance Parts I & II to be breath taking. A Detective Story was very much a sci-fi noir story which reminded me of 1984 and Brazil all at the same time. Very much for mature viewers only, 17 and up. Too bad the post-Matrix movies set in the world of the Matrix were so bad.
