Amazon.com:
Chapter three of George Romero's mighty zombie trilogy has big footsteps to follow. Night of the Living Dead was a classic that revitalized a certain corner of the cinema, and Dawn of the Dead was nothing short of epic. Day of the Dead, however, has always been regarded as a comedown compared to those twin peaks--and perhaps it is. But on its own terms, this is an awfully effective horror movie, made with Romero's customary social satire and cinematic vigor--when a "retrained" zombie responds to the "Ode to Joy," the film is in genuinely haunting territory. The story is set inside a sunken military complex, where Army and medical staff, supposedly working on a solution to the zombie problem, are going crazy (strongly foreshadowing the final act of 28 Days Later). Tom Savini's makeup effects could make even hardcore gore fans tear off their own heads in amazement. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 starsThe Underground Zombie Movie that refuses to be 2nd to none !!!!!
Yes This movie is a classic!!!!It gives you that unnerving feeling of gloom and doom like you are trapped and cant escape....however the movie is not completely taken in by zombie action which makes it that much better. How you say???? Its easy to be taken in by seeing people running from zombies or barely escaping death by zombie (the movie has its fair share of these scenes)but the overall story line and the acting take it to a different level....I really see this movie only gaining more underground momentum as one of the greatest zombie flicks of all time, unless a new zombie movie ever comes out that takes it to another level above the great George Romero..... then this is it The Day of the Dead

ohh and the picture and sound are perfect too!!!! Plus extras !!!

5 out of 5 starsTop notch zombie film and one of Romero's best, great stuff!.
Day of The Dead is usually seen as the weakest of the trilogy by hardcore Romero fans although I'm not sure why, this however is by no means a bad film in fact it's one of Romero's best films that he's ever made and definitely one of my favorites. The film was plagued from the start with budget problems and script re-writes. This was originally supposed to be Romero's epic, but due to the problems that George Romero was going through the finished product turned out quite different. If Romero had had better funding, certain improvements could have been made to the script, but he still provides an excellent and grim film. Like the previous films, we are given a sense of claustrophobia, of being sealed inside by what's outside as the film is set mainly in one place. While NOTLD was set in a farmhouse and the characters may have been able to run somewhere else, and Dawn was set in a shopping mall where all your hearts desires could be found for low low prices, this is set in an underground shelter with miles of caverns leading to nowhere: it's as if the human race has already sealed itself in Hell while the undead were above ground trying to reach the living.

The third part in George Romero's zombie trilogy concludes with a small group of soldiers and scientists hiding in an old underground bunker network while millions of zombies stroll around above. Tensions rise in this moody zombie flick, great atmosphere and some stunning zombie effects (courtesy of make up fx wiz Tom Savini) with an outstanding starring role by army zombie Bub and the highly memorable and over the top villain Captain Rhodes. Although the finished film is somewhat different to Romeros' original dream for this movie (due to budgetary constraints) it is still a gem to have in any horror collection. The few survivors are not plain civilians as before, they work for a government which does not exist anymore with the soldiers supposedly facilitating the scientists. Both groups are torn amongst themselves and each other, with the soldiers under the command of Rhodes-one of the most psychotic characters ever, yet completely understandable (played with the utmost power by Joe Pilato who was so over the top that he should have won some kind of award for playing the most memorable villain in horror history!), and the scientists all pulling in different directions. This is primarily a film of characterisation as we see how each person reacts to the realisation that the zombies have won. It may be true that none of the characters are likable, but this only adds to the realism as if we were in this situation. Joe Pilato's character was great and had some of the best and most hilariously quotable lines in the whole film, if it weren't for him I don't think the film would have turned into the zombie masterpiece that it is, although the film was still great with or without him.

The effects, again done by Tom Savini are simply amazing. With faces being torn apart, heads flying off and intestines spilling everywhere and lots of flesh eating-every single death scene is a masterpiece of gore. Although many horror fans do not like this, it portrays a horrifying situation like no other movie. Don't expect any award winning acting though as this doesn't have any, but to be honest this is a zombie film and does a zombie film need great acting....NO. If anything the awful acting has a good effect on the film. There is lots of annoying shouting and swearing in this too, which does get on your nerves but that makes it all the better when you see the annoying soldiers get eaten alive! and all turns out to be realistic, if you were stuck for days in a place with people you hated for days you'll feel the same way. As for the bonus disc, the extra features are good and the 37 minute documentary gives great insight into the feature, especially Howard Sherman (Bub) revealing how he went about playing his role. But I still feel it could have gone abit deeper into the making - I wanted to know all about the effects from the cool jawless zombie you see in the beginning of the film. Although Day (after a few viewings) has now become my second favorite and has an epic opening scene in a (un)dead city, I still can't shake the feeling that it could have been much more. But don't let that dissuade you from getting it. It was a fun and entertainingly gory zombie film, this is a must see for the zombie films fan, and if you have already seen it: Buy this Divimax Special edition of the film immediately!.

5 out of 5 starsRomero's Masterpiece!!
This has to be my favorite of the trilogy, by far, with Dawn coming in a close second. Each character plays a key role in the development of the movie & moves the story forward. It's been said that the script was over-written (too much cursing, in other words), but I think it just adds to the realism of the setting; if I were one of the few remaining humans around I wouldn't care much about who heard me curse either. This movie took Dawn to a whole new level, and we see the human population growing smaller & smaller while the zombies come from out of nowhere.

It takes place roughly 10 years after Dawn, which took place roughly 10 years after Night, and roughly 20 years before Land; Diary of the Dead can be looked at as an update of the original.

The bonus disc has some goodies on it, certainly worth the money. There are 2 mini-documentaries & a couple slideshows of production photos. Plus the audio commentary by the director, Tom Savini, and the chick who played the only chick in the film. Pretty interesting stuff if you're into how movies are made.

I'm hoping that one day George will remake this movie with the original concept he had in mind, which would have been longer & much more extensive than this "watered down" version. Also look for a special apperance by Chef Brockett as a zombie.

5 out of 5 starsAnother great Romero movie
This is the third movie in George A. Romero's "dead" series. It takes place after the hit "Dawn of the Dead" and doesnt dissappoint. Although there isn't as much action as in Dawn, it's still an excellent movie. The reason I purchased this movie is because I've been a fan of George Romero's work and I've seen the movie before. I've always liked it and now that I have a PS3 I wanted to see it on blu ray. Despite it being a movie made in 1985, the picture and sound is still INCREDIBLE. I'd highly recommend this movie for anyone thats a fan of old school zombie movies, even if you're a fan of new school zombie movies I think you'd still enjoy this.

5 out of 5 starsGrade A classic
Out of all 5 dead movies Day Of The Dead is my all-time favorite, it's dark, bleak and it times damn right horrific.

The film kicks off with a nightmare scene that Sarah played by Lori Cardelle, she is one of the survivors that's held up in a missile silo that she shares with a group of scientists and soldiers who are at each others necks about how to deal with the zombie problem topside, as tensions increase, the situation gets worse and all hell breaks lose.

The acting is very good here in this film you can tell that Jospeh Pilato who plays Roades sure dose enjoy plying a psychotic military leader.

The special make up fx, which done by Tom Savini were spot on it has got to be some of the best fx he has done for a film, after all he did win the saturn award for his work in this film, this film I believe has some the most gruesome moments I've ever seen in a zombie film.

Day of The Dead is I feel the best one out of the 5 zombie films that George Romero has made and is a grade A classic in it's own right.
