These sustained plots are the real meat of the show: Kelly's hardline ethics are humanized by watching him clumsily come to a professional relationship with his ex-wife Laura (Sherry Stringfield) and work through an affair with Officer Janice Licalsi (Amy Brenneman), who is herself entangled with mobsters; while Sipowicz's near-death in the pilot has repercussions that crop up throughout the series, threatening his sobriety and his developing relationship with a lawyer (Sharon Lawrence)--and then there's his tense relationship with African American Lt. Fancy (James McDaniel), which affords some trenchant looks at racism inside and outside the department. ER for the cops My son recommended I bought this DVD package. At the price, it was a small risk to take, as I confess I never watched NYPD Blue when it was on TV.
The first couple of episodes got me interested. Three more and I was hooked. I especially like Caruso as Det. John Kelly, but this is a series with only the highest class drama. Each episode seems to advance one long term story, plus tackling one major and also a minor self-contained story. There is the inevitable love interest, but it never gets tacky like in 'Grey's Anatomy.'
Although the show depicts New York in the 1990s, the whole show is in no danger of feeling outdated. Crisp writing, thoughtful plots and some very neat camera work keep the action rolling and the characters totally plausible.
It's my favorite series after the early ER shows, because it shares quality, tension and a great feel of realism. The big question is whether to order series 2, as Caruso leaves and I wonder if he can really be replaced.

One of the best This DVD set brings back so many memories. Every episode is engaging and very entertaining. It is well worth the money.
all around good show Although it starts off kind of slow and hard to follow, by the third or fourth episode, I was hooked. Probably Caruso's best TV, including the CSI he's on now. Character development is excellent, decent amounts of action without lots of gore, and the writing is superb. Well worth picking up to fill in the gaps of nothing to watch on network tv.
NYPD BLUE GREAT SERIES I own Season I and I am extremely pleased with it! I really hated when this series ended! I thought that I would never follow another series again! The characters seem so real/nothing phony about them! Also the way that the show is filmed is really superb! You really get the sense of being in New York and involved in the good, bad and ugly of the city! Dennis Franz is the show! I also enjoy Gordon Clapp and Gail O' Grady for their significant contributions to the show! Yes there will never be another great police show like this! Thank goodness we can purchase it in DVD format!! Highly recommended!!
