Amazon.com: This bizarre little horror movie is set in the mining town of Valentine Bluffs, which may be in Canada, though the odd, indeterminate accents of the cast are perhaps meant to suggest that it is truly a regionless everyland. In a cruel twist of fate, the Bluffers have not celebrated Valentine's Day in 20 years due to a terrible mining accident. This year is to be the first return of the Valentine's Dance--repeatedly described by adults as the biggest event of the year--but someone (or something?) is trying to put a stop to the fun by delivering heart-shaped candy boxes with real hearts in them. The dance is called off in the name of public safety, the young (well, youngish) people decide to hold a party inside the mine instead, and if you think we're getting out of this one without someone getting a pickax through the chest, you have no business watching slasher movies. --Ali Davis
This should be illegal! This is simply a flashy repackaging of a drive-in quality movie from decades past. I bought it with the idea that it was at least a remake of the original. Every time some production company ripps off movie fans like this, the fans get a little more suspicious about buying movies. You got me once, but I'll certainly make sure that this doesn't happen to me again. I can't imagine why the movie industry is spiralling into oblivion, but I'm sure repackaging old flicks to make them look like new releases, as well as the more-involved but still brainless remakes themselves,is playing some part. Good luck, Hollywoood.
Bloodier than ever! More 80's slasher goodness that while in the same vein as every other movie of it's kind plotwise, sports a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from the mediocre. Plus it opts to go with a holiday theme. Although Valentine's Day may not sound like a lot to work with in comparison to a holiday like Halloween in terms of scares, My Bloody Valentine is a dark, grim, and gory classic.
Ages after the occurrence of a horrific Valentine's Day tragedy, a small sleepy mine town decides it's time to start celebrating the long shunned holiday once again. However when grisly murders begin to happen once again in the m.o. of the infamous Harry Warden, the town succumbs to the threats to keep the holiday banned. That is all but a batch of mine workers and their girls who decide to throw a their own get together, and even venture down in the mines for a little fun. The fun proves to be short lived when an unidentified killer crashes the party and starts picking them off at an alarming rate.
So the premise itself is a bit hokey, but My Bloody Valentine doesn't play around. The idea of a slasher movie taking place in a mine shaft may at first sound dull, but the grimy and claustrophobic atmosphere it creates is a unique touch. And now with previously banned gore footage spliced back in, My Bloody Valentine has some of the most violent and gruesome kills of any of the 80's slashers, particulary the scenes with the clothes dryer and the pick axe that are sure to satisfy even the most demanding gore fans.
Overall this is must see material for fans of movies like Friday the 13th, The Burning, The Prowler, and other great slasher classics of the 80's. My Blody Valentine is one of the greats!
Disappointing As it was a 'classic' 80s slasher movie, I was not expecting Citizen Kane, but was not quite expecting My Bloody Valentine to be as poorly acted as it actually was. Moreover, the 'teens' in this movie all seem to be aged about 30 and while the gore is undoubtedly more explicit than it was in the cut version, it is still nothing special and certainly does not redeem the film. What can I say really, I freely admit to having some out and out trash on my DVD shelf, but this is going up for re-sale I am afraid.
Special Edition DVD I had never seen this 1981 horror movie because I'd been warned that many scenes had been cut. When I discovered a special edition DVD was being released this year with the cut scenes re-inserted, I decided to purchase it. I had never see it, except for the recent remake.
MBV is a film which many horror fans include in their all-time horror favourites. I was prepared to take a chance and buy it to add to mine. I have to say I enjoyed the movie. It is a cut-above your standard horror film. An interesting storyline to boot. It is actually better than the 2009 remake, and the storyline is quite different in parts. I think the 2009 remake is more focussed on the 3D effects.
The DVD allows you to watch the movie with or without the cut scenes, or you can just watch them on your own. Other features include the origins of horror movies, and a featurette on MBV. The film has also been nicely restored, except for the cut scenes. You can see where these have been reinstated, although not a huge distraction to the viewing experience.
A worthwhile purchase if you are keen to build your horror DVD collection. Just make sure you buy the Special Edition, not the former DVD release (which contained the 'hacked' version).
...and a BLOODY one it is! No need to get into the story details. We all know the blab and to those who don't, well plentry of reviews to enlighten you, so I won't waste your time any longer than I should. To all old school (and newbies) slasher fans, go out and grab this beauty. We have been waiting for this previously censored footage to be unleashed for 20+ years, and finally here it is.
Enough extras on the DVD to keep me happy, also the flick can be watched via two options. 1) The theatrical version (who cares?) 2) The fully UNCUT version (we've all been waiting for)
The only downfall is that the censored footage hasn't been digitally remastered, and so what? Hardly noticeable. It's a long awaited treat, and I'm happy to have it finally arrive at my doorstep! Long Live The Gore!!!!!!!!!
