Amazon.com Review: Amazon Best of the Month, December 2008: Danny Gregory's An Illustrated Life is a visual delight of color and texture--a funky and frenetic "book about books people have made," perfect for chronic doodlers, journalers, and art lovers. Sharing vibrant excerpts from the notebooks of 50 illustrators, artists, and designers, each accompanied by an introduction by the artist, it's a gorgeous, intimate exploration of the creative process. Gregory's passion for the "illustrated journal" is infectious--for him, artist's sketchbooks represent a nonthreatening place to record "risks, mistakes, regrets, thoughts, lessons, and dreams." Whether you are charmed by the illustrations of Amanda Kavanagh, or intimidated by the musings of Stefan Sagmeister, poring over this eclectic group of fledgling and famous "artists" will inspire you to tackle an illustrated journal of your own. --Daphne

Inspirational An Illustrated Life is a tremendously inspirational book. It encompasses a full variety in style and skill, providing an intimate view of several artist's personal sketchbooks. Besides the rich variety of sketches, the artist comments really demonstrates the flexibility of sketching and the sometimes differing views as to the function of sketching, either as rough drafts or complete works in themselves. Abundant amounts of illustrations in exceptional print quality.
Highly recommended for anyone seeking some inspiration and motivation in art. A pleasurable read.
Inspirational, enlightening, and fun to look at! I was pretty certain that I would like this book as I love looking at people's sketchbooks, but what surprised me was how much I enjoyed reading each person's statement. The statements were illuminating about people's process, their reasons for doing a sketchbook and even about technical matters like favorite pens, etc. My wife, who I did not think would be interested in the book very much also found it delightful and captivating.
Fun and Inspirational This book has so much in it that you can't just sit down and read it all in one sitting. Most illustraters, if not all, have something to teach the artist in all of us. The lesson I learned is to live "The Illustrated Life." Don't wait until I have time. Keep a sketch book at hand at all times. Love the book!
A Really Great Book for Artists & Journal Keepers There is just a whole to love about this colorful and modestly priced soft cover book. Danny Gregory has assembled an amazingly diverse group of artists who keep journals. Listed in alphabetical order, each artist gets a chance to talk about their journaling and a showcase a selection of their colorful pages. Artists as famous as Robert Crumb, Chris Ware and Elwood Smith are featured along side others whose journals are magnificent, but who are unknown to the public. Almost fifty very diverse artists are featured in this 266 page volume. Anyone who enjoys seeing sketches, drawings, journals and humorous art should check out AN ILLUSTRATED LIFE. I find it to be a real inspiration to my own work.
