Book Description: Have you ever wanted to be a full-time artist and make a living at it? Have you ever wanted to know how to get started selling your art? Then this book is for you! "Breaking into the Art World" is filled with practical information on "how to get started making a living as an artist." The author, Marshall White, lives in Kona, Hawaii and works as a full-time artist. His paintings and prints of Hawaii are wonderfully detailed and popular with local art buyers and tourists who visit the island. At this writing, his works of art are displayed in various galleries in Hawaii and in Thailand and are collected by people from all over the world. This book is the first of his writings to be published and was written to help other artists who often ask him, "Do you make a living with your art how did you make the jump to being a full-time artist?" It has been written for people who, like himself when he began, have no clue what to do to get started marketing and selling their art.
NOT AT ALL A BOOK TO ENTER THE REAL ART WORLD This is not at all a book that will give you hints or help you to Break into the Real Art World ( I am talking: real galleries and the Real Art world out there: The Contemporary art world). This is only a book to help you sell your stuff in the streets which is what you should avoid at all costs if you want to break into the real thing. Not a helpful book at all. Its about selling Epson prints for $30 in the streets. Great if it is what you want to do but not great if you have a bit more ambition than that. Some people are fine with it, great art does not sell in the streets. Sorry, but its true.
Got me enthusiastic about making art I have worked as a street artist for years doing quick sketch portraiture but this book really sparked my interest in creating my own artwork and selling it in the same way. The book mostly focuses on selling work without going through galleries. If you are interested in doing gallery work, I would recommend another book, Taking the Leap, by Cay Lang. Breaking Into the Art World is great if you are just starting out as an artist and makes the process of selling your artwork on a smaller scale seem a lot easier with step by step information.
Different approach to art world An interesting book. Very concise, gives you an alternative view on life as an artist and how to make money from your art. Very good section on documenting your work, full marks for that. I'll be implementing some of those ideas. It's nice to read of someone who's made a name for himself and managed to sell his art without galleries.
An honest how - to- book that makes sense I purchased this book with several other titles on the same subject. If I had to pick only one of them this would be the book. Out of the books I've read this is the only one that gives you a solid plan and explains step by step how to make it work. A must read for any artist who is interested in a plan for making a living making and selling their art.
Could have been called "THE KNITTY GRITTY" Although this book may not be applicable to every artist's career path it does outline _very_ specifically_ and _simply_ how this un-schooled artist went from struggling street vendor to living off of his artistic product. The career strategy outlined centers on reproduction of your original artwork. That being said, at first blush this may not seem too helpful for folks dead-set on exhibiting at The Whitney. BUT if someone keeps an open mind and is receptive while reading this book they may get an idea or two. You can plow through this in an evening. I'm an artist, and although my desired career path has nothing in common with this gentleman's, I'm glad I bought the book. You can see my artwork at www.rlmcintosh.com
