Product Description: An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living. This volume follows our band of survivors on their tragic journey in search of shelter. Characters live and die as they brave a treacherous landscape littered with packs of the walking dead.
Lesser writing, lesser artwork... So, only six issues in, and the amazing artist from the beginning is replaced by one with a sloppier style. Also, in spite of Mr.Kirkman's very enticing Introduction in the first volume, the story is reduced to yet another generic zombie story. The story is very jumpy. The drama is very thin. The characters... really, I wish they would all just die.
The first volume was incredibly promising. This, and its subsequent volumes leave a lot to be desired.
A Survival Series that Will Survive Generations Go Robert Kirkman! So far no one has been able to tackle this genre quite like Kirkman. I always wanted more intellectual scenerios from my zombie movies, but with all the blood and action, I felt kind of dumbed down. Through this comic series we have a lot of time to explore the human mind when something globally tramatic happens. With the story spread very comfortably, we get fast page-turning when we read about the survivors' personal crisises, and we get cold hard chills when we are revealed the dead. I actually got pretty scared reading some parts. The writing method is very effective.
What more could we ask for? We got new characters, a new area, and new problems. I am dying to see how they overcome the next one. Word of advice: "Do not let your eyes stray" you will want to read each panel carefully, because when you are revealed the shocking dialogue It's really intense.
Holy @%#$ing @#$%! ...seriously ((((((DO NOT READ THE OTHER REVIEWS UNLESS YOU WANT THE PLOT SPOILED))))) I really don't think there is a way to describe the amount of talent that goes into this book without dropping some F-bombs. but I'll try... Speaking generally about the entire series so I don't give anything away... Lets just say that I honestly can't remember the last time words and images had this big of an impact on me. I work at a comic book store and I read everything. Honestly. My @$$ is kicked. This book has made the biggest impact on me than ANY other series I have read. YOU HAVE TO READ THE WHOLE THING. Kirman slows down the story from time to time but only if its necessary, and then pulls you right back in. You are in good hands. This book has EVERYTHING! If this review is the one that talks you into reading the series... your welcome =o) trust me.. you will want to thank me later.
I just don't get it... I love zombies; I've seen every single George Romero film. I love comics; I've been reading them for about 18 years. I should love The Walking Dead, and lord knows I've tried, but I just can't.
Volume 1 is great. The artwork is great, and the story moves at a brisk enough pace to keep things interesting, despite the sometimes naff dialogue and one dimensional characters. After finishing the first volume I couldn't wait to get my hands on volume 2. Volume 2 wasn't as good; the new artist was marginal at best, and the story/dialogue/character development side of things had gone down hill.
I started to wonder what all the fuss was about, but surely a series that sometimes finds itself mentioned alongside Y the Last Man had to have something going for it. So I soldiered on and read volumes 3 and 4. Instead of improving, the dialogue became comically bad. The pathetic female characters were not the author's attempt to comment on the male characters sexism, they were in fact, just pathetic.
Still, I decided to give the series one last shot, because despite all negatives, it was still pretty readable, (much like Budweiser is drinkable) and I'd started to care a little bit about Rick, Dale, Andrea and the rest.
Wow- I sure wish I'd stopped at four, as volume 5 is to zombie comics what the Dolph Lundgren Punisher is to comic movies. A big flaming pile o' poo, complete with one of the least believable comic villains I've ever encountered.
But hey, for some reason a lot of people are still really into this, and who am I to judge, I used to read that crap Image put out in the 90's (although this might be even more poorly written). But if you're like me, and you liked volume 1, but weren't that into volume 2, but you thought to yourself "Hmmm, maybe this will get good again..." stop right there. It won't. It sucks. Go spend your hard earned money elsewhere.
