A Magazine Article Would Have Sufficed I bought this book, along with John Barr's Barr Flies, in preparation for a steel heading trip to the tributaries of L. Erie. Ironically, the two men are friends and fish together, but the similarity in the two books ends there. My two beefs with the book are sparse information content (this should have been a magazine article) and the awful writing/editing. Virtually every page has grammatical mistakes that either confound the author's meaning and/or distract the reader. The editor, if there was one, is clearly not a fisherman and uses phrases seldom if ever uttered by fishermen - again a distraction. I found that reading the figure and picture legends were the least painful way to quickly pick up what the book offered. I also purchased the companion DVD and Landon comes across as more professional and dare I say intelligent than what I would have surmised from the book. However, the rock concert discography through-out the video was an unnecessary distraction, designed I suppose to hide the thin editorial content. Get a good guide for a day and you'll learn a lot more.
How to Catch the Biggest Trout of Your Life Landon Mayer has put dozens of years hunting high-country trophy trout into a concise volume. There is no mystery to his mastery. Diligence, hard work, keen observation and, guiding with great anglers allow his career notes to flow easily to the student. The seasoned angler will appreciate revelation of critical details and the less experienced flyfisher can benefit from re-reading the wealth of to-the-point instruction. Landon is a Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor and professional guide, more importantly he loves to practice catch and release trout fishing. His book let's one do it all well. - reviewed by Gary Eaton
where's the detail? Great pictures, stories, and charisma. Landon truly is a class act. My only gripe is he doesn't take you through the literal steps of catching the monster fish that grace the book's pages. He talks about everything but....
I enjoyed it though.
A well written book with new techniques! Superb This is a great book for imporving your fishing skill as well as knowing trout behavior. Honestly, being a biologist myself, I still felt my excitement about his detailed observations of trout behavior. The whole book flows smoothly with lot's of fun stories and also with lot's of clear illustrations and beautiful monster trout. I really enjoy this book! I also have his DVD, and really love it as well. Sight fishing is the game of this book, he demonstrated step by step processes... from sighting a trout, approach, cast and fight it (lot's of first hand knowledge)... very useful book and fun to read. I highly recommended...top quality book on my fly fishing bookshelf.
Trout Porn I sent for the book after reading Ralph Cutter's review in the July/August issue of California Fly Fisher magazine. The photographs of massive trout are astonishing, but more to the point, the instructions on how to catch the big ones are lucid. On the literary side, the book should have been proofread before going to print, but who cares... it really does tell you how to locate and catch the biggest trout of your life, right down to what gear to use and how you take its picture before returning it to the water. Go for it.
