White Racism in Action ^ The book chronicles the ruthless actions of frightened mobs lead by the ignorant racist and displays a pictorial image of the cruelty perpetrated against the accused who were assumed guilty and never given the opportunity to prove his/her innocence. Photographs 42-44 show Frank Embree who was first whipped, paraded around, photographed, and lynched. What a horrible, horrible, horrible way to die . . .
VERY DISTURBING ^ A very visually and mentally disturbing book. You can almost feel the ghosts around you as you read. I had to get it out of my house.
Necessary, and a near miss ^ It is almost impossible to review a book like this in an objective manner. The imagery is so horrible, the circumstances so brutal, that one is tempted to give the collection five stars just for being present. In this, it has a similarity with scholarship of the holocaust and other recognizable collective evils. The photos are incredible reminders of a terrible period in our history, and the authors have done a great service in gathering them and organizing them in one place so that their collective power can overwhelm, and remove from possibility the claim of "isolated incident". The book is an essential visual history for anyone who wants to understand the period.
I cannot bring myself to award 5 stars because of the way the book is organized. Much of the material regarding the incident(s) depicted is found at the end of the book, which means a reader like myself must continually flip back and forth while reading. I am not sure why the photographs were not presented on one page with accompanying text on the facing page, which seems to me to be the ideal way to do it.
I recommend the book highly. I just wish it had been presented in a manner that would make it easier to digest fully.
best job ^ this is a very somber and revealing account of the graphic horrors inflicted upon African-Americans (and others) through the gruesome tactic of lynching. the authors have done a very good job in detailing, pictorially, the long history of brutality and terror imposed upon Blacks in America by use of this vile tactic. they should be applauded for their courage and honesty in describing this exceedingly dark and disturbing chapter in America's history. The book avoids sugar coating and minimalizing what transpired over this particualar period of violence in America and is not afraid to jolt and shock the sensibilities of its readers, however painful that might be. this is valuable resource material for anyone who wants to do further research on the legacy of lynching in America.
