Editorial Comments

Amazon.com:
Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 starsStruggle for life
Like all good movies, this one is worth viewing multiple times. Each time I watch it I find new things I hadn't fully appreciated before. The Edge is not just about physical survival, but also about the search for meaning in one's life. The characters in the story struggle to stay alive in the wilderness on their quest back to civilization as they confront the question of what it is they are living for.

5 out of 5 starsEgde of your seat!
Thrilling story of survival against all odds. Spectacular scenery and great actors. One of my favorites.

2 out of 5 starsNot a real representation of Alaska
I live in Alaska, and this movie does not portray Alaska properly. Bears are not predatory towards humans, and the bear in this movie is a real work of fiction. I would hate people to see this and think that real bears act this way, because they never do. Bears do not hunt down humans, nor see them as a food source or enemy. By far the most dangerous thing in Alaska is the weather and remoteness, not the wildlife. If you can get past how ridiculous the bear is in the film, it is mildly entertaining.

5 out of 5 starsMovie-The Edge
This is another movie I enjoy watching over and over and over. It is never boring. Any movie with Anthony Hopkins is worth watching! I am sure everyone agrees. Him and Alec Baldwin were superb in this movie. I am glad to own it now on DVD!! Awesome movie!! Thanks.

5 out of 5 starsfirst rate
The Edge is a very unique movie with a lot going for it. The scenery is absolutely incredible (great DVD transfer), Bart The Bear is awesome, and the interaction between Hopkins and Baldwin is quite interesting & compelling. Alec Baldwin puts in a great performance as a conniving sleaze ball saved by the stoic Anthony Hopkins. Originally I considered this somewhat of a B grade movie, but the test of time shows it to be one of the best action adventure flicks of the 90's.
