5 out of 5 starsA WEREWOLF BY NIGHT
This epic horror comic collection collects the stories of the highest ranking horror hero in marvel comics history. Jack Russel is your ordinary teenage kid until he turns into a werewolf by night. Shocked on what happened to him every full moon he knew there was no escape of this horribile curse. Than whe tradgedy hits him in his family he vows himself to use his werewolf side for good. In this essential the Werewolf by Night even fights the infamous Dracula.

5 out of 5 starsGreat collection of 70's comics
This will be short, but sweet.

The cover doesn't match the one shown, but the content is what matters.

A fantastic throwback to the 70's. Great stories and art from comic book legends before they were well known. An excellent collection of comics that brings fond, nostalgic memories from my youth.

5 out of 5 starsWhere Wolf? There Wolf!
The basics is this: A young man turns 18 and becomes a werewolf. Like the Hulk, he happens to save the day while fighting the beast within. As a bonus, Dracula shows up to cause trouble. Overall, this is a good collection of a forgotten hero. If you like Werewolves, then buy this book.

5 out of 5 starsI like this a lot.
I like this. It's all about a guy who turns into a werewolf but he fights badguys while he's a wolf. It's a must have for werewolf fans.

2 out of 5 starsWhere wolf? There wolf!
In the early `70s, Marvel had a small line of horror comics that supplemented their superhero line. Most significant - and the best in the bunch - was Tomb of Dracula. Although other reviewers seem to look on it more favorably, to me, Werewolf by Night seems only significant in its mediocrity.

Werewolf by Night follows Jack Russell, who, upon his eighteenth birthday, inherits the family curse of becoming a wolfman during the three nights of the full moon. (Perhaps he could have had a hint of his canine leanings based on the fact he seemed to be named after the Jack Russell terrier.) During his time as a werewolf, Jack becomes savage and has sub-human intelligence; although murderous, he winds up rarely killing innocent people. Most of the issues deal with Jack's quest to free himself of the curse while various low-rent villains either try to stop him or use him for their own ends. Jack is also concerned about his sister Lissa, who will eventually come under the curse herself.

Why does Werewolf by Night fail to be interesting? The standout reason is Jack himself, who is a rather dull character, with the few supporting characters being rather flat as well. Even as a werewolf, he is not all that exciting; initially, he can hardly hold his own against normal people. Also, generally the writing is weak. Many of the early stories have the villain vanquished by a freak event, rather than through the skills of the werewolf.

In later issues, Jack must contend with Baron Thunder and the Committee as well as an intrepid detective on the hunt for a werewolf; both of these storylines extend over quite a few issues but wrap up so abruptly you get the feeling the writers got bored and just wanted to end things. I was also not very impressed with the art; maybe its just the transfer to black and white, but it just didn't work for me; as an example, when characters sweat, they look more like they're melting.

Although rarely awful, Werewolf by Night also is rarely good. Compared to other Marvel comics from the same era, this one only stands out in its banality. I recommend this book for Essentials completists only; if you're of a casual reader, go elsewhere (such as Tomb of Dracula).
