5 out of 5 starsA must have for any artist.
In my drawing classes, I've always wondered why my drawings looked so boring and lifeless. I knew they were missing some sort of boost, but I couldn't figure out why. After I've read through this book, I can honestly say drawing figures has been so much easier. The book clearly explains the fundamentals of what gives any pose and powerful feel of flow, even for simple standing poses. Reread the concepts if you need to, and study what's going on in the sketches. Once you master applying his lessons, your characters will have much more life even in the sketch's earliest stages. Don't just look at the images in this book. Analyze and study its construction. It will pay off.

5 out of 5 starsUseful for animators and life drawing
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2P6YUFG1T6SNZ Here's a very useful book not just for animators, but for anyone who do character drawings. It's called Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators, authored by Michael D. Mattesi.

First of all, this is a book for intermediate and advanced artists. Foundational knowledge of anatomy is required to fully appreciate and follow along with the lessons.

This book is about creating realistic poses for life drawing. Examples show how forces inside the body and outside (gravity or objects) act on the human figure, and how the body reacts to the force.

There are lots of tips and illustrated examples on strong and memorable poses, such as the using of structure and form, overlaps, foreshortening, silhouettes etc. The explanations are clear and simple, even very sketchy illustrated examples bring the point across with very few lines.

While many instructional drawing books teaches how to draw, this book teaches how to think before drawing. Whenever I draw, I always remind myself of the tips to help prevent my characters from being too static.

Additionally, there are also chapters on handling clothing, drawing on location and drawing animals.

There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.

5 out of 5 starsMUCH better than I expected.
When I got this book I was a bit skeptical of everyone's opinions of it as immense tool to the self taught. Upon receiving it and reading the first few chapters I saw that this book knew the mistakes I made when I drew and it explained not only why I made them but how I can avoid them as well. This book will cover things like feature exaggeration, shape, form and line function(and it will tell you why its a bad idea to have a million lines that do nothing). There is too much in this book to put in a review such as this one.

Buy it, you will NOT be disappointed.

3 out of 5 starsNot what expected
This book has a lot of great drawings of people in dynamic positions and personality. However, the book only covers a few basic principles and doesn't go into what I was hoping for such as the use of lines to create a sense of movement or intensity such as swish lines following a fist.

Good, but not what I had hoped for.

5 out of 5 stars I do recommend a book Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators, Second Edition for artists.
I am learning in the Animation College. I think, this book is a great book for student. There are picture-examples on the every page. The author explains important things for artists by simply words. I like this book "Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators".
