| 1. Blankets |
|
By: Craig Thompson By: Craig Thompson Publisher: Top Shelf Productions August 06, 2003
I don't know how to describe the way I feel about Blankets other than, when I closed its covers, it made me cry. Not because the ending was sad, because it wasn't, it was beautiful and hopeful, but because I couldn't believe what I had just experienced and I couldn't believe that it was over. For the first 200 pages of Blankets, I read slowly, immersing myself in every single drawing, every line... more

| 2. Lost Girls Hardcover Edition |
|
By: Alan Moore, Melinda Gebbie Publisher: Top Shelf Productions June 30, 2009
A different take on the traditional stories of Alice, Dorothy and Wendy, although the sexual nature of the book is not for the under-aged or those of prudish minds. I really liked some of the major illustrations throughout the story that showed the parallel of the original story and Moore's version. An interesting (and titillating!) read... more

| 3. The Way Home & The Bittersweet Summer (Owly (Graphic Novels)) (v. 1) |
|
By: Andy Runton Publisher: Top Shelf Productions September 29, 2004
The Owly comics are deceptively simple tales of a sweet little owl and his forest friends, told without words but with plenty of emotion and gesture. This volume, which comprises two fairly long stories, is the first book in the series.
In the first story, Owly rescues a worm who nearly drowns in a sudden rainstorm. He picks up the unconscious worm with a leaf, brings him home, and sits... more

Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, The Surrogates (Top Shelf, 2006)
It is by now a Hollywood cliché, not to mention a Hollywood truism, that the book is better than the movie. And that is certainly the case where The Surrogates is concerned. That said, in some ironic way, reading Robert Venditti's original source material gave me a slightly greater respect for Jonathan Mostow's bloated... more

| 9. Voice of the Fire |
|
By: Alan Moore Publisher: Top Shelf Productions July 15, 2009
Whenever an admired comic book writer makes the crossover from comics to novels I usually leap at the chance to see how the writer acquits himself. To varying degrees I've never been disappointed, and such is the case with Alan Moore's novel "Voice of the Fire". Moore is a fantastic writer, not just in terms of storytelling, but also in how he arranges words on a page to accurately simulate the characters... more

| 10. Owly Volume 2: Just A Little Blue (Owly (Graphic Novels)) (v. 2) |
|
By: Andy Runton Publisher: Top Shelf Productions March 30, 2005
A nice little book for very young readers, kindergarten and maybe lst grade. But I was thinking is was suitable for a seven year old in 2nd grade, and he has gone considerably beyond the level of Owly Vol 2. It was described as a graphic novel but that would seem (to me) to be an exaggerated idea...it has few words and lots of pictures, and calling it a novel gives a wrong idea. For young children... more
