| 1. Beetle Bailey "The First Years: 1950-1952" |
|
By: Mort Walker Publisher: Checker Book Publishing Group September 01, 2008
This book is a great introduction to Beetle Bailey for those who have not met them before. And for those that are familiar with Beetle this is a great refresher. It's also a lot easier than having to wait for the next trip to come out.
The book follows more Walker and his transition into the position of Beetle Bailey comic strip writer. We also see how his character spider morphed into... more

| 2. Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, Vol. 2 (Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon) |
|
By: Alex Raymond Publisher: Checker Book Publishing Group December 15, 2004
The adventure strip on the comics page has not yet quite gone the way of the dodo, but it is definitely in spotted owl territory: rare and threatened constantly by outside forces (such as newspaper economics). Certainly, the few that are left are bland. None can compare the adventure strips of yore, and among these, Flash Gordon is one of the tops.
The title character is a near perfect... more

| 3. Milton Caniff's Steve Canyon: 1949 (Steve Canyon Series) |
|
By: Milton Caniff Publisher: Checker Book Publishing Group May 01, 2004
My reviews for the first two issues of Checker's Steve Canyon series would suggest that my mind is made up in advance in its favour. Actually, the strip has a couple of strikes against it: 1) the hero is a little bland and too iconically good for my tastes and 2) while patriotism may have its place, if it crosses into jingoism it becomes an irritant. However, the sidekick Happy Easter provides a little... more

| 5. Growingold With BC: A Celebration Of Johnny Hart |
|
By: Johnny Hart Publisher: Checker Book Publishing Group October 03, 2007
I've always been a huge fan of B.C. I've been collecting B.C. books since 1969. This book is a great collection of the classics and the newer strips. The text at the front of the book which describes the history of the strips and the characters behind the characters makes this an invaluable addition to any fan's library... more

| 7. Dream Of The Rarebit Fiend: The Saturdays |
|
By: Winsor McCay Publisher: Checker Book Publishing Group November 25, 2006
"Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" is McCay's overlooked masterpiece. "Little Nemo" gets more press (and don't get me wrong - it deserves the highest possible praise) but The Fiend is often equally compelling and more psychologically insightful. More adult in subject matter than Nemo, it is less visually resplendant, but still quite powerful in its invocation of the fears and hopes underlying our day-to... more

Nice, but maybe a nicest printing could be done. A larger scale, with a better color treatment and a better restoration. The actual printing is not that bad, but I guess is all you can get with a cheap chinese printing... more

| 9. Supreme: The Return |
|
By: Alan Moore, Chris Sprouse Publisher: Checker Book Publishing Group April 03, 2003
I know from other reviews on this book that they were doing a "tribute" to Superman when they came up with Supreme, but damn, they didn't have to go out and rip off the entire DC universe as well! I had a hard time reading the stories here cause I was seriously distraced by matching up all of the characters here with the DC version they're ripping...I mean giving tribute to. I mean C'mon! Polyman?... more
