The stories in this volume are really strong, and the art is fresh and clear. (The art found in this book is also similar to the art in Essential X Men vol 3) After dealing with boring and lackluster eras like the when Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Hawkeye were the only members and the very early years of the team we finally get to my favorite age of The Avengers.
However... more

The Fist of Khonshu series of 6 is really the best work done on the Moon Knight character. I would like to see more of this type of story for MK. This is the series that made me a MK fan, and aside from the work done by Doug Meonch and Bill Sienkiewicz in the early 80's it is the best. (And that may be a tie.) Some of the other hero/morality tales where they tried to place MK as a socially relevant... more

By the early 70s, Marvel Comics seemed to be losing a little of its creative spark. Ditko and Kirby were gone, and Stan had his eye on movies and television. But then a new breed of writers and artists started to filter in. Guys like Starlin, Steranko, Adams, Simonson and many others started to re-invigorate the company. One of these writers was the late Steve Gerber who some might know for his... more

This should really have been called Essential Son of Satan & Satana as those two characters take up the entirety of the book.
The Son of Satan stories take up the most of the book, dealing with the half-human son of "Satan", Damian Hellstrom, as he fights his father. Though an interesting premise, how would he use his satanic powers for good and how will he avoid becoming evil as his... more

"Marvel Feature" #11 and #12 paired Ben Grimm, "The Thing" from the Fantastic Four, with The Hulk and Iron Man, respectively. From this emerged the mid-1970s "Marvel Two-In-One" (MTIO) bimonthly series which starred The Thing and a second Marvel character. Similar to the coincident Spider-Man "Marvel Team Up" series, the co-star roster ranged from the popular (Captain America, Spider-Man, Daredevil)... more

Essential Horror vol. 2 was a highly anticipated volume of comics for me due mostly to the fact that I was familiar with just about all the characters featured within its pages but had never actually read any of their stories. I found The Living Mummy and Brother Voodoo series to be especially enjoyable. The Mummy's origin is particularly good. The rest of the collection is so-so but it's fun to read... more
