| 1. Hamlet (Classics Illustrated) |
|
By: Steven Grant, William Shakespeare, Gary Fields Publisher: Berkley Publishing Group 1990-02
"Hamlet" doesn't need any introduction -- the tortured Dane, the ghost, meditations on suicide and a climax full of death. But as well-known as the storyline is, the play itself is what deserves the attention, both for Shakespeare's shadowy plot filled with uncertainty and treachery -- and for his brilliant, immortal writing, which takes on a new dimension when read on the page.

| 6. Superman and Batman vs. Vampires and Werewolves |

By: Kevin VanHook, Tom Mandrake Publisher: DC Comics August 04, 2009
Well, I wasn't sure about this, but thought I'd give it a try. Mandrake's art is pretty spectacular. The story has some interesting beats too, and I enjoyed VanHook's using so many ancillary characters besides Supes and Bats. HOWEVER...his dialogue and his narration left a LOT to be desired. Just read the last 2 pages of the book if you don't believe me; the lame lines of dialogue coming from Two... more

| 7. Spectre, The: Crimes and Punishments |
|
By: John Ostrander, Tom Mandrake Publisher: DC Comics October 08, 1993
The Spectre is a DC character who was early on subjected to what I like to call the apotheosis of comic superheroes. The most obvious example of this is Superman, who was created as a sort of generic strongman bully in the '30s and evolved into a cosmic messiah by the '70s. The Spectre was the ghost of tough-as-nails cop Jim Corrigan sent back from the afterlife with a mission from God ("You shall... more

|
By: John Ostrander, Tom Mandrake Publisher: IDW Publishing September 26, 2007
What is forgotten here in the previous review, is the beautifully and moody hand color work by one of the top colorists of the time, Julie Sczesny! She breathes life into the Demons of Cynosure, like no one else ever has since. Along with the funny bowling scene previously mentioned, it was made alive, with her excellent brush strokes, and her different tactics on each Munden's Bar. more

| 10. Punisher by Garth Ennis Omnibus |
|
By: Garth Ennis Publisher: Marvel Comics November 26, 2008
In an era of increasing prices of individual issues and out-of-print trade paperbacks, the Punisher Omnibus is one of the best deals out there. This monster tome is 50 issues of Garth Ennis (and Frank Castle) at his best. The opening 12 issues, "Welcome Back Frank" redefined a B-list character that suffered through the gimmick years of the mid 90's and established Ennis as the quintessential... more
