| 1. Essential Avengers Volume 7 TPB |
| By: Steve Englehart, Tony Isabella, Scott Edelman, Gerry Conway, Jim Shooter, Bill Mantlo, Stan Lee, George Perez, Don Heck, Keith Pollard, Joe Sinnott, John Buscema, Sal Buscema, Pablo Marcos, George Tuska, Sal Trapani, Jack Kirby Publisher: Marvel Comics February 03, 2010
The stories in this volume are really strong, and the art is fresh and clear. (The art found in this book is also similar to the art in Essential X Men vol 3) After dealing with boring and lackluster eras like the when Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Hawkeye were the only members and the very early years of the team we finally get to my favorite age of The Avengers.
However... more

| | 4. The Death of Captain Marvel (Marvel Premiere Classic) |
| By: Jim Starlin, Steve Englehart, Doug Moench, Pat Broderick Publisher: Marvel Comics June 02, 2010
There are a handful of works that transcend their genre and elevate it to new heights. Miller's Dark Knight Returns, Moore's Watchmen, Claremont's X-Men God Loves Man Kills. And this one. Jim Starlin in order to deal with the death of his mother creates the implausible first graphic novel Marvel produced.
There are no real battles in this, just a man facing death, which is so often not... more

| | 5. Tomb of Dracula Omnibus, Vol. 2 |
| By: Marv Wolfman, Steve Englehart, David Kraft, Gene Colan, Tom Palmer, Virgilio Redondo Publisher: Marvel Books December 16, 2009
When the comics code relaxed its standards in the early 1970s to once again allow horror comics Marvel jumped right out of the gate with Tomb of Dracula. The book quickly settled in with Marv Wolfman writing, Gene Colan penciling, and Tom Palmer inking. Here in the second omnibus they hit on all cylinders producing what many believe to be Marvel's best book of the decade.
In retrospect... more

| | 6. Essential Dr. Strange, Vol. 3 (Marvel Essentials) (v. 3) |
| By: Steve Englehart, Frank Brunner, Marv Wolfman, Roy Thomas, Jim Starlin, Roger Stern, Stan Lee, Jim Lawrence, Dan Adkins, Denny O'Neil, Gene Colan, Alfredo Alcala, Rudy Nebres, Al Milgrom, Tom Sutton, Steve Ditko, George Tuska By: Frank Brunner, Jim Starlin, Dan Adkins Publisher: Marvel Comics January 09, 2008
This volume collects the first 20 odd issues of the Dr. Strange's second headliner title and it's a bit of a mixed bag. The book starts out strong with classic stories by Steven Englehart and artists Frank Brunner and Gene Colan. Englehart had an amazing ability to balance both thrilling action with cosmic psychedelia. Even when the stories begin to veer into hyperbolic profundity, he grounds it... more

| | 8. Avengers/Defenders War (Marvel Premiere Classic) |
| By: Steve Englehart Publisher: Marvel Comics October 24, 2007
I really enjoyed re-reading this collection from 1973. I remember when it was being published and my brother and my best friend would wait at the gift shop for each new issue. I was a "big" collector back then, and this was the highlight of all my collection. Avengers vs. Defenders, the hours we spent debating who was stronger, smarter, more super. Truly a great collection, for first time readers and... more

| | 9. Essential Silver Surfer, Vol. 2 (Marvel Essentials) (v. 2) |
| By: Stan Lee, John Byrne, Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers, Joe Staton, Ron Lim By: John Byrne Publisher: Marvel Comics July 04, 2007
I'm sure I would be branded a heathen by the comic community by saying this, but this second volume is WAY more fun to read than the first. I don't really want to see Silver Surfer, master of space, trapped on earth. This volume features him out in space, kickin' butt. The stories are more modern (venturing into the 80s!) and are def more relatable than the whining in the first volume. Enjoy... more
