| By: Larry Hama, Marshall Rogers, Danny Bunlanadi, William Johnson, Ron Wagner, Russ Heath, Andy Mushynsky Publisher: IDW Publishing February 24, 2010
Do not let the four stars fool you. In this case, four stars means, "Sure is nice to have these back issues reprinted again!" Time has a way of making the past seem "better" or "different". This is certainly the case in this collection of the later issues of the original Marvel series. There is no argument that Cobra Commander getting his due as Fred VII violently assumes his identity makes for... more

| | 6. Marvel Masterworks Atlas Era Menace |
| By: Stan Lee Publisher: Marvel Enterprises October 31, 2009
...the answer was "We surrender!"
This book was widely billed as Atlas' finest horror title, specially published to compete with the very successful Al Feldstein scripted EC horror titles. The stories were scripted by Stan Lee and the artists were to be the cream of the Atlas crop - Bill Everett, Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Gene Colan, etc.
The results were less than stellar... more

| | 7. Essential Marvel Horror, Vol. 1 (Marvel Essentials) (v. 1) |
| By: Gary Friedrich, Steve Gerber, Mike Friedrich, Chris Claremont, John Warner, Bill Mantlo, Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas, Tony Isabella, Tom Sutton, Herb Trimpe, Jim Mooney, Gene Colan, Sal Buscema, Bob McLeod, Jim Starlin, Sonny Trinidad, Craig Russell, Ed Hannigan, Russ Heath Publisher: Marvel Comics November 15, 2006
This should really have been called Essential Son of Satan & Satana as those two characters take up the entirety of the book.
The Son of Satan stories take up the most of the book, dealing with the half-human son of "Satan", Damian Hellstrom, as he fights his father. Though an interesting premise, how would he use his satanic powers for good and how will he avoid becoming evil as his... more

| | 8. Showcase Presents: The Haunted Tank, Vol. 1 |
| By: Robert Kanigher Publisher: DC Comics May 01, 2006
Russ Heath lives! Heath is the greatest graphic combat artist of all time. His renderings of tanks, rifles and soldiers are almost photo realistic, but with an artist's touch. Especially satisfying are his facial renditions of combat troops; gaunt, disheveled and "staring 1,000 yards ahead".
There are some enjoyable "quirks", such as the mis-labeling of German Panther tanks as... more

| | 9. Marvel Masterworks Presents Atlas Era Journey into Mystery 1: Collecting Journey into Mystery Nos. 1-10 |
| By: Stan Lee, Russ Heath, Tony Dipreta, Gene Colan, John Romita, Jerry W. Robinson, Joe Maneely, Dick Ayers Publisher: Marvel Enterprises October 29, 2008
These are the early issues of marvel comics entry into the Horror Comics field. As time went on they got alot better but compared to the first volume of strange tales which was from 1951 , they had by this time figured out to keep the sci fiction stories to a minimum. The art is above average as was the case with many marvel/atlas titles of the period. This volume is a great way to read those early... more

| | 10. Essential Punisher Volume 3 TPB (v. 3) |
| By: Mike Baron, Roger Salick, Eliot R. Brown, Gregory Wright, Erik Larsen, Russ Heath, Bill Reinhold, Mark Texeira, Jack Slamn, Tod Smith, Jim Lee, Lee Sullivan By: Eliot R. Brown Publisher: Marvel Comics February 04, 2009
This third collection of "Essential" Punisher stories is another good collection that has a few shining moments. For one thing, we get to see the Punisher interact with some great standard Marvel characters rather than just the usual drug dealers. Don't get me wrong, most of the stories here involve just the standard "Punisher versus druggies" storyline, but there are a few standout stories. ... more
