| 1. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay |

By: Michael Chabon Publisher: Brilliance Audio on CD Lib Ed January 03, 2005
Ugh, this is the type of book that frustrates me. It had so much promise: interesting characters, a dramatic family crisis, even a realistic and unconventional female love interest. I guess I was expecting it to be about two cousins taking on the industry that was ripping them off; you know, more New York stick-it-to-the-man type plots. Instead it kept going off on strange tangents and yet never... more

| 2. The Yiddish Policemen's Union: A Novel (P.S.) |
|
By: Michael Chabon Publisher: Harper Perennial April 29, 2008
I enjoyed this book a lot. Chabon is a great writer. His anti-hero in this book, Meyer Landsman is a not-quite-typical gumshoe detective, addicted to plum brandy and solving crimes and wrestling with the failure of his marriage. What's not to love? His sidekick, half-cousin Berko is also his partner and is also half Indian, half Jewish. And just as they begin working the case of Landsman's murdered... more

By: Sarah Vowell, They Might Be Giants Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio October 01, 2003
I knew Sarah Vowell's voice and style from episodes of This American Life on NPR. However, I picked up this book knowing nothing about it, just on a recommendation from a friend. It took me a few essays in to really start to get into it, but once I did I was hooked.
Sarah Vowell's writing is both precise and conversational at the same time. I found myself devouring essays about political... more

| 6. Wonder Boys: A Novel |
|
By: Michael Chabon Publisher: Random House Trade Paperbacks April 29, 2008
Semi Spoiler Alert ---Wonder Boys is a beautifully written funny and fun read. This is a rare combination as many beautifully written books like Oscar winning movies tell stories that are neither funny nor fun. We enter the world of the writer that has published with minor fame but mostly within a small circle of writers and academics. Grady Tripp, a professor, at a college in Pittsburgh is on his... more

By: Michael Chabon Publisher: William Morrow & Co 1988-04
I'm a fan of Chabon's stuff. But I began in the middle of his oeuvre, then over time worked forwards, then backwards. So maybe this informed my reaction to this, his début.
I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I wasn't enthralled. There was a poetic grace at play...but I never felt as charmed as I'd expected I would.
Maybe the problem I had was that the characters are... more

|
By: Michael Chabon Publisher: Harper Perennial November 01, 2005
I like writing that reads. You know? Writing that transforms from letters and words into pictures that show up in my mind. Chabon seems to tell more than show.
Here's an example of a sentence that feels as if the writer isn't writing so much as he is impressing.

| 10. Summerland |
|
By: Michael Chabon Publisher: Highbridge Audio September 12, 2002
This book just didn't do it for me. I don't like fantasy very much to begin with, but I've really liked Chabon's other books. So I picked this up for a light summer read, and I felt like I was in the midst of a Harry Potter novel, except better-written and done by an American. I never understood all the fuss about Harry Potter, and I don't understand it about this book either.
The opening... more
