|
By: Kurt Busiek, Alex Ross Publisher: Marvel Comics January 20, 2010
Wizard gave this bad boy spot #2 on their best graphic novels of all time. I highly disagree, Marvels is better than DC: The New Frontier by a long shot. This novel is the most realistic superhero comic ever created. What would all of us puny humans have to say about all these superhero's destroying our property in fist fights? Regular Joe's don't usually have a huge appearance in superhero books... more

| 2. Trinity Vol. 3 |
|
By: Kurt Busiek, Fabian Nicieza Publisher: DC Comics October 20, 2009
This third and final volume of the Trinity triple-threat had its moments (very few of them actually). It did remind me a little of the galaxy-spanning, multi-chaptered Justice League comics of the mid-70s(when the League would have their annual team-ups with the Justice Society and the Leigion of Super Heroes, and they would all battle some world-threatening force). However, there just weren't enough... more

| 3. JLA/Avengers |
|
By: Kurt Busiek Publisher: DC Comics November 18, 2008
After the proposed project was delayed way back in the 1980's, the two major comicbook companies (DC & MARVEL) finally got their **** together 20+ years later, and the JLA/AVENGERS Cross-Over finally got off the ground. It was worth the wait because [they] made it into a "4-Issue Event" (in its initial release). Now it is published into trade paperback combining all four issues from the talents... more

| 4. Conan Vol. 2: The God in the Bowl and Other Stories (v. 2) |
|
By: Kurt Busiek Publisher: Dark Horse January 27, 2010
If you've got alittle barbarian in you, then this is perfect. Action, suspence, and the sword and sorcery we love. I couldnt put it down, and cant wait to read the rest of the series... more

| 5. Conan Vol. 4: The Hall of the Dead and Other Stories |
|
By: Kurt Busiek Publisher: Dark Horse Comics 2007-05
The storyline has started to pick up from last issue. Presumably because the last issue featured the "Tower of the Elephant" which was such a familiar storyline. I note that there is a transition of writers here. Whatever, there is a glaring discontinuity. Conan was shot thru the left shoulder with an arrow after he survived a jump over a chasm. In the next few pages, Conan is depicted without any... more

| 6. Conan Vol. 3: The Tower of the Elephant and Other Stories |
|
By: Kurt Busiek Publisher: Dark Horse June 28, 2006
In my opinion, this one actually kicks it up a notch from the relatively disappointing The God in the Bowl. For most of volume three, the writing and artwork both are back up to the expected awesomeness that is the reason I read this series. Each of the original stories here is excellent, fitting in nicely with the Conan universe and staying true to the feel of what Conan tales are meant to be. ... more

| 7. Astro City Vol. 2: Confession |
|
By: Kurt Busiek Publisher: Wildstorm June 23, 1999
Of the three volumes released so far, Confessions is probably the best in the Astrocity series. It tells about the coming of age of a young boy with the superhero name Altar-boy, as a sidekick to an ageing superhero the Confessor. The parallels especially to the famous flying rodent and sparrow sidekick is terribly overwhelming.
While Busiek's writing is intelligent, I can't believe... more

| 8. Conan Volume 1: The Frost Giant's Daughter And Other Stories (Conan (Graphic Novels)) |
|
By: Kurt Busiek Publisher: Dark Horse April 13, 2005
In addition to being a founding father of fantasy literature, Conan the Barbarian is a legend to graphic-art aficionados from his glory years as a Marvel Comics title. So it was a no-brainer for Dark Horse to resurrect the character. Fortunately they used their brains and came up with something to please both Conan fans and newcomers.
This first volume, published in 2005, collects the... more

|
By: Kurt Busiek, Greg Ruth Publisher: Dark Horse June 29, 2008
Am I the only one who doesn't like the art in this book? Just something grates from the very beginning. I can understand stylistic differences but come on! However this could be just my personal preference. I like distinct, cool, filmic type artwork where i can really see what's going on and the artist knows his stuff. In this book the art seems hidden and indistinct as if drawn for a childrens... more

| 10. Life in the Big City (Astro City, Vol. 1) |
|
By: Kurt Busiek, Brent E. Anderson, Alex Ross Publisher: Wildstorm June 23, 1999
The writing here is decent, the drawings are precise. Astrocity appears to be a whole new take on superheroes. More so than your average angsty Spiderman with his daily money woes. The problem here appears with trying to create whole new personae, superpowers and costumes for each superhero and then craft a story around each. This would ensure a rich vein of new material to constantly draw upon and... more
