| | 2. Batman: A Death in the Family (DC Comics Classic Library) |
| By: Jim Starlin Publisher: DC Comics September 29, 2009
It's been a while since the publication of this comic. A dreaded re-read only confirmed my very poor opinion of this comic. It can't be the worst comic ever (it has Jim Aparo as illustrator) So work it out by subtractive deduction... more

| | 4. The Death of Captain Marvel (Marvel Premiere Classic) |
| By: Jim Starlin, Steve Englehart, Doug Moench, Pat Broderick Publisher: Marvel Comics June 02, 2010
There are a handful of works that transcend their genre and elevate it to new heights. Miller's Dark Knight Returns, Moore's Watchmen, Claremont's X-Men God Loves Man Kills. And this one. Jim Starlin in order to deal with the death of his mother creates the implausible first graphic novel Marvel produced.
There are no real battles in this, just a man facing death, which is so often not... more

| By: Steve Englehart, Frank Brunner, Marv Wolfman, Roy Thomas, Jim Starlin, Roger Stern, Stan Lee, Jim Lawrence, Dan Adkins, Denny O'Neil, Gene Colan, Alfredo Alcala, Rudy Nebres, Al Milgrom, Tom Sutton, Steve Ditko, George Tuska By: Frank Brunner, Jim Starlin, Dan Adkins Publisher: Marvel Comics January 09, 2008
This volume collects the first 20 odd issues of the Dr. Strange's second headliner title and it's a bit of a mixed bag. The book starts out strong with classic stories by Steven Englehart and artists Frank Brunner and Gene Colan. Englehart had an amazing ability to balance both thrilling action with cosmic psychedelia. Even when the stories begin to veer into hyperbolic profundity, he grounds it... more

| | 6. Death of the New Gods SC |
| By: Jim Starlin Publisher: DC Comics August 11, 2009
Created in the early 70s Jack Kirby's New Gods were many things, iconic, epic, colorful, loud and even a bit silly but they were never dull. Until now.
As part of the year-long build up to their 'Final Crisis' storyline DC killed off the New Gods to make way for 'the 5th World' (the New Gods being the 4th World). In the introduction to this book writer/artist Jim Starlin explains that... more

| | 8. Cosmic Odyssey |
| By: Jim Starlin, Mike Mignola, Carlos Garzon Publisher: DC Comics September 08, 2009
I read this as a kid. I bought it because it was thick. More pages the better was my philosophy at the time. It's haunted me from time to time in the passing years and I just re-read it tonight.
I completely holds up.
Mike Mignola's art is breathtaking. And so dark, there's tons of black on every page. I think it sets a great tone for this tragic story.
The... more

I don't know what the other reviewers where reading, but this a solid run on The Amazing Spider-man, One reviewer said Parker had no girlfriends in his life at the time, this is not true, Betty Brant makes a return (She's separated from Ned Leeds)and wants to hook up with Pete (she here through out the whole book), then there's the Black Cat, she really likes Spider-man, Mary Jane is gone but not... more

| | 10. Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos (Fantastic Four) |
| By: Jim Starlin Publisher: Marvel Comics April 19, 2006
The infinity gauntlet is one of the best series ever written, and this FINALLY collects Thanos:Infinity Quest. A series i could never find way back in the day when "gauntlet" was coming out. The 1st half of the book is the resurrection of Thanos and his meeting and outwitting of the surfer. Good stuff. The story of how Thanos obtained the gems is where the real meat is though. He shows his usual... more
