By: Jaime Hernandez Publisher: San Val March 26, 2007
While I have always admired Jaime Hernandez' art and was familiar with the characters from his stories in Love and Rockets, I had never actually read any of the stories featuring his creations Maggie, Hopey, Rand Race, Rena Titanon, and Penny Century. Reading MAGGIE THE MECHANIC, the first volume in an all-new 25th anniversary series of chronological reprints, I can say that it's probably a good thing... more

I'm sure I'm one of a tiny minority that didn't enjoy this book. This is the first comic/graphic novel that I literally couldn't finish. I started and re-started 3 times and couldn't get into it. The "story" dragged on and never really went anywhere. I love comics and could read a graphic novel about nuclear fission, but this book just had no plot.
I never fell for the characters... more

| 4. Locas II: Maggie, Hopey & Ray (Love & Rockets) |
|
By: Jaime Hernandez Publisher: Fantagraphics Books June 29, 2009
Jamie Hernandez offers us another surreal view into the Love and Rockets world with Locas II. This book focuses on the lives of Maggie, Hopey and Ray, with an often-surreal twist including what can only be described as a hallucinatory sequence with the Maggie story. If you are a Love and Rockets fan this is a great book to pick up. Like many of the love and rockets story lines that are collected, they... more

| 5. Love and Rockets: New Stories, No. 2 |
|
By: Jaime Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez, Mario Hernandez Publisher: Fantagraphics Books August 29, 2009
This book doesn't stand alone; it stands atop nearly thirty years of previous work by both of the creators; this would be a horrible place to begin reading either of them. This particular yearly "issue" has a hundred pages of comics, evenly divided between Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez.
Jaime's half comes in two parts, but they're continuing the same story -- the story that began in last... more

By: Jaime Hernandez Publisher: Fantagraphics Books December 05, 2007
By the time I got to this book, there was no stopping me. I had to literally force myself to slow down, so that I could savor the stories longer. I was so sad to have finished it, however now I'm reading the books following it... and still loving it. Jaime has really created something special with the dynamic relationship between Maggie and Hopey... more

|
By: Jaime Hernandez, Mario Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez Publisher: Fantagraphics Books September 15, 2008
The underground comix movement of the '60s and '70s gets the most attention among comics lovers and historians, but it would be a tragic mistake to overlook the incredible variety of independent work created in the 1980s. At a time when mainstream comics were variously exploding and imploding, independents charged ahead, sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing spectacularly, but always taking huge... more

I read my man Jaime Hernandez's latest LOVE & ROCKETS collection a few months back and I have to say it was a lot like starting up with a soap opera you were once hooked on but left behind years ago, only to return and feel like you never stopped watching. I was hooked on the original run of L&R (1981-1996), and when it was over I didn't feel the least bit saddened since it felt like it was coming... more
