| 1. Punisher MAX, Vol. 5 |
|
By: Garth Ennis Publisher: Marvel Comics July 01, 2009
I don't like a lot of work done by Garth Ennis.(I loathe Preacher and The Boys) but up until this volume I thought Punisher: Max was some of the best work he's done. His take on the character was amazing. I ignored all the hate coming from this book because I wanted to complete his run on The Punisher but this book was terrible. First of all the art for the first part of the book is awful. It hurt... more

| 2. New Avengers, Vol. 3 |
|
By: Brian Michael Bendis Publisher: Marvel Comics February 25, 2009
I give this book full grades based upon the Confession chapter alone. Iron Man's heart-breaking admission to the body of his friend, Steve Rogers, is one of the best written, most touching pieces that I have had the fortune of reading. The Hawkeye chapter, as well, was just beautiful: the art and the story. Some of the artwork in the civil war portion is hit and miss (Captain America I am talking to... more

| 3. The Complete Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination: The Graphic Story Adaptation |
|
By: Alfred Bester Publisher: Epic Comics 1994-02
I'll start out by agreeing with one reviewer who wrote that the book would have been perfect had the end been fleshed out a more "realistically". Of course we're dealing with Sci Fi here so realism is somewhat less than objective. Either way, that makes this book pretty close to perfect, at least from my perspective. That it was written in the 1950s makes it an even better book, as it still stands... more

| 5. New Avengers: Civil War v. 4 |
|
By: Brian Michael Bendis Publisher: Panini (UK) Ltd. March 20, 2008
A Skrull Analysis for you: The Skrulls are everywhere this season. But - the Skrulls have never been my favourite bad guys for the reason that like Hydra, AIM, etc - they've been pretty non-threatening assembly line bad guys. Looks wise, they also feel like green humanoid cast offs from Godzilla's family. Hence, the SECRET INVASION - which is the one serious attempt to revive the Skrulls and give... more

| 6. New Avengers, Vol. 5: Civil War (v. 5) |
|
By: Brian Michael Bendis Publisher: Marvel Comics August 15, 2007
Exciting and interesting storytelling that requires a knowledge of Civil War, outside of this volume. More than anything else, this collection just fills in some of the more personal pieces in the overall story. I am not a huge fan of Chaykin's art, so the first story for me was hampered by it. Also the story about Spider-Woman and Hydra was a bit brief and almost ridiculous. Power Man's story though... more

|
By: Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction Publisher: Marvel Comics September 24, 2008
I really love this Iron Fist book. Volume one was amazing, and volume two is just as good. I love the other Immortal Weapons that are introduced in this story too. Great action, some good humor, and a nice resolution. Overall it's a fantastic read, and I'm just knocking off one star because it does drag just a bit towards the end. It could have probably been about one issue shorter. ... more

| 9. The Chronicles Of Solomon Kane |
|
By: Roy Thomas, Ralph Macchio, Howard Chaykin, Steve Carr, Bret Blevins, Mike Mignola, Others Publisher: Dark Horse December 23, 2009
Dark Horse is doing the comics community a fantastic deal with these types of high quality reprints. So one gets to sample short and lesser known comics mini-series for a reasonable price.
If truth be told, most of these lesser known series failed because of lack of interest. Reprinting them allows us a peek into why they failed.
I think that REH's Solomon Kane is an interesting... more

By: Howard Chaykin, Mike Mignola Publisher: Dark Horse April 04, 2007
... and "a Picture is Worth a Thousand Words" are common axioms and they aptly apply to common writers.
Fritz Leiber, however, is an uncommon writer - a veritable artist of semantics - whose eloquence of soliiquy transcends the pedestrian cartoons that so feebly fail to get hardly anything (w)right about these two superlative antiheroes.
I know that in our increasingly illiterate... more
