The stories in this volume are really strong, and the art is fresh and clear. (The art found in this book is also similar to the art in Essential X Men vol 3) After dealing with boring and lackluster eras like the when Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Hawkeye were the only members and the very early years of the team we finally get to my favorite age of The Avengers.
However... more

| | 2. Marvel Masterworks: Captain America Volume 1 TPB |
| By: Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers, George Tuska, John Romita Publisher: Marvel Comics March 24, 2010
Captain America, created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby (unlike most Golden-Silver Age characters, Stan Lee was not involved) in the summer of 1940, was one of the biggest characters of Timely Comics in the 1940s, one of many, many patriotic characters created in response to the environment of World War II. Following the end of the war, he, like most superheros, dropped off the publication radar, despite... more

This volume collects the first 20 odd issues of the Dr. Strange's second headliner title and it's a bit of a mixed bag. The book starts out strong with classic stories by Steven Englehart and artists Frank Brunner and Gene Colan. Englehart had an amazing ability to balance both thrilling action with cosmic psychedelia. Even when the stories begin to veer into hyperbolic profundity, he grounds it... more

| | 5. Marvel Masterworks Atlas Era Menace |
| By: Stan Lee Publisher: Marvel Enterprises October 31, 2009
...the answer was "We surrender!"
This book was widely billed as Atlas' finest horror title, specially published to compete with the very successful Al Feldstein scripted EC horror titles. The stories were scripted by Stan Lee and the artists were to be the cream of the Atlas crop - Bill Everett, Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Gene Colan, etc.
The results were less than stellar... more

| By: Archie Goodwin, Mimi Gold, Allyn Brodsky, Gerry Conway, George Tuska, Johnny Craig, Don Heck, Gene Colan Publisher: Marvel Comics April 30, 2008
Straddling the Silver and Bronze ages for comics, the nearly 600 pages cover 1969-1971 through The Invincible Iron Man #12-#38 and Daredevil #73.
Appearances by the Avengers, Daredevil and S.H.I.E.L.D. only enhances the story lines where Tony (Iron Man) Stark faces off against a number of recurring evil doers. This is a very impressive volume of intelligence and technology from the "Armored... more

| | 8. Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea: The Complete Series Volume 1 |
| By: Various, George Wilson, Mike Sekowsky, George Tuska, Don Heck, Alberto Giolitti Publisher: Hermes Press July 13, 2009
A trip down memory lane...a costly one, but an enjoyable one for anyone who grew up in the 60's like I did, with a weekly menu of great TV shows to look forward to. There was nothing I enjoyed quite as much as the shows created and produced by Irwin Allen, and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was certainly his most successful. I loved to collect comics back then, and the TV and movie... more

"Marvel Feature" #11 and #12 paired Ben Grimm, "The Thing" from the Fantastic Four, with The Hulk and Iron Man, respectively. From this emerged the mid-1970s "Marvel Two-In-One" (MTIO) bimonthly series which starred The Thing and a second Marvel character. Similar to the coincident Spider-Man "Marvel Team Up" series, the co-star roster ranged from the popular (Captain America, Spider-Man, Daredevil)... more
