| 1. The Shining: Collectors' Edition (Collectors' Editions) |
|
By: Stephen King Publisher: Plume October 31, 1991
I don't usually rate between 2-4 I either recommend or I don't. I have to say that I don't recommend this one. The journey is just not worth it in the end. King's character details are amazing at first but by page 300 you start to get really tired of it. The only thing scarier than room 217 is Chapter 38 absolute snooze fest for quite a few pages only to give you two bits of information that could... more

| 2. Road Dogs: A Novel |
|
By: Elmore Leonard Publisher: William Morrow May 12, 2009
This latter day Elmore Leonard novel contains plenty of what long time fans have come to expect. In fact, a number of characters, locales and plot elements have been resurrected from previous Leonard offerings. Most notably, professional bank robber Jack Foley from Out of Sight, a character brought to life by George Clooney in the movie of the same name, serves as the book's protagonist. Much... more

Here's an oldie, but goodie in the list of Elmore Leonard's titles! Set in Palm Beach and Detroit, the story is filled with the interesting characters that Leonard exells at bringing to life!... more

| 4. When the Women Come Out to Dance: Stories |
|
By: Elmore Leonard Publisher: Harper Paperbacks January 06, 2004
Either way, this is a great collection, whether you're new to the author or are a veteran reader of his novels. This has two novellas and seven short stories, each quite distinctive. Two are from his days as a western writer. Fans will recognize characters from Leonard's novels. My favorites are the two novellas and the title story, but all are worth reading... more

| 6. Swag: A Novel |
|
By: Elmore Leonard Publisher: Harper Paperbacks April 14, 2009
My brother-in-law recommended Leonard to me and I started with 3 novels in 'Dutch Treat'--Swag, The Hunted and Mr. Majestyk--and since we share a love of mystery series I figured I'd love him. My problem with Leonard is I love his writing but I can't stand his characters. I mean how many lowlife thugs and their ditzy women who crave abuse of one sort or another can I warm up to or be amused by? ... more

| 7. Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing |
|
By: Elmore Leonard Publisher: William Morrow & Company 2007-12
All the 1 star reviews are absolutely correct about the rip-off of wasted space BUT if you purchase any of the Kindle versions of Leonard's other books, e.g. Unknown Man #89, Stick, etc, you will get EXTRAS which include the text version of this Rules of Writing book. Most of the Kindle editions go for 7.50-7.99 and are worthwhile for the book PLUS the EXTRAS. ... more

By: Elmore Leonard Publisher: HarperTorch June 04, 2002
Harry Arno the bookie has to escape mob guys and the cops by fleeing to Italy, but of course they follow him there. The foreign setting was a nice change for Leonard, though it lost its way in the middle. Moving things to Italy really saved this one. All characters were well drawn, especially the straight-shooting Raylan, who should get his own movie or TV show (hear that, McCloud?). Some of the plot... more

|
By: Elmore Leonard Publisher: HarperTorch June 04, 2002
Elmore Leonard is never a discovery; he's the master, but this book was hiding in a bin I hadn't been through in awhile and the moment I found it I devoured it. This is classic Leonard--lean, Hemingwayesque, beautifully plotted and clear as crystal. A Detroit process server stumbles onto a strange case and finds himself trapped by an array of dangerous individuals: a scam artist with a Louisiana... more

| 10. LaBrava: A Novel |
|
By: Elmore Leonard Publisher: Harper Paperbacks April 14, 2009
If it walks like james M. Cain and it tastes like James M. Cain, then it must be Elmore Leonard. After reading the ten or twelve most recent Leonard novels and short story collections as they were published and thoroughly enjoying them, it became time to try some of his earlier work. LaBrava was the first, published more than twenty years ago. I was floored by the atmosphere of South Beach in the early... more
