| 1. The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You |
| By: Neil Gaiman, Bryan Talbot, George Pratt, Stan Woch Publisher: Vertigo September 03, 1993
Honestly, at this point, anything that Neil Gaiman writes would impress me. Even so, I don't feel this is his greatest work. The writing and story are there, but they just aren't as compelling as earlier volumes. Every fan of the Sandman will inevitably read this volume, and I hope others find it less disappointing... more

| | 2. Sandman 8: World's End (Sandman Collected Library (Prebound)) |
| By: Neil Gaiman Publisher: San Val 1995-07
In which Gaiman takes a breath before entering the inevitable final act of The Sandman. At first glance, World's End is another series of short stories, a la The Sandman Vol. 3: Dream Country and The Sandman Vol. 6: Fables and Reflections, albeit one with a stronger framework to it that reminded this English major of Canterbury Tales. But there's more going on here than meets the eye, and the final... more

| | 3. Superman: The Man of Steel, Vol. 1 |
| By: John Byrne, Dick Giordano Publisher: DC Comics September 01, 1991
The story of Byrne is well known from his success at Marvel, through his recruitment by D.C. to reboot The Superman series. Unfortunately for D.C. they got Byrne at the height of his arrogance, and the low of his inspiration. Superman TMoS V.1 dives right into yet another retelling of the Superman origin story.
Byrne quickly brushes past the first 20 odd years of Clark Kent's life... more

| | 4. Draw Comics with Dick Giordano |
| By: Dick Giordano Publisher: Impact June 10, 2005
Some say the drawings are outdated, but those are the comics I enjoy reading. They're not out of date. The foundation and basics are the same. It's a nice starting point. I enjoyed it... more

| | 5. Marvel Romance |
| By: Stan Lee, Gary Friedrich, & more, Dick Giordano, Jack Kirby, Gray Morrow, Sol Brodsky By: & more Publisher: Marvel Comics March 01, 2006
I never really had a use for romance comics. I just saw them as the industry's excuse for writing soaps. Now as an adult, I can see how the genre is missed. In this day and time it would be redundant to reienvent it, but it's all good that Marvel is collecting the best of its romance line of the 60s and 70s.
I do consider myself a romantic at heart, even though I consider myself a real... more

| | 6. Modesty Blaise |
| By: Peter O'Donnell, Dick Giordano Publisher: DC Comics 1994-12
I've been a fan of Modesty and Willie since the books first came out, and I was a loyal reader of the strip in the London Evening Standard for many years. If you like action novels, with unusual villains, fast-moving scenes, and plenty of tongue in cheek humor, Modesty Blaise is the girl for you, and 'Modesty Blaise', the first novel in the series, is a good place to start. After writing... more

| | 7. Essential Marvel Two-In-One Volume 1 TPB (v. 1) |
| By: Len Wein, Mike Friedrich, Steve Gerber, Chris Claremont, Roy Thomas, Bill Mantlo, Roger Slifer, Marv Wolfman, Scott Edelman, Tony Isabella, Jim Shooter, Jim Starlin, Gil Kane, Sal Buscema, George Tuska, Herb Trimpe, Bob Brown, Ron Wilson, Arvell Jones, Dick Giordano Publisher: Marvel Comics November 30, 2005
"Marvel Feature" #11 and #12 paired Ben Grimm, "The Thing" from the Fantastic Four, with The Hulk and Iron Man, respectively. From this emerged the mid-1970s "Marvel Two-In-One" (MTIO) bimonthly series which starred The Thing and a second Marvel character. Similar to the coincident Spider-Man "Marvel Team Up" series, the co-star roster ranged from the popular (Captain America, Spider-Man, Daredevil)... more

| By: Denny O'Neil, E. Nelson Bridwell, Elliot S. Maggin, C.C. Beck, Kurt Schaffenberger, Dave Cockrum, Dick Giordano Publisher: DC Comics December 06, 2006
There was a time in the 1940's when "Captain Marvel" ("The World's MIghtiest Mortal") was once the even more popular than "Superman," out selling the "Mand of Steel."
This did not make the publishers of DC Comics, Harry Donnenfeld and Jack Leibowitz, happy. DC Comics took Fawcett Publications who plublished "Captain Marvel" to court claiming that Captain Marvel was an infringement of... more

| | 9. Batman: Blind Justice |
| By: Sam Hamm Publisher: DC Comics 1989
This compelling, incredibly dark Batman saga is marred only by the careless art (I didn't bother to note the illustrator's name). The original issues included special tribute pinups by various artists, none of them trying very hard. Don't know if those are in this tpb. Sam Hamm, who penned the 1989 'Batman' feature, does much better here - stronger story, characters and dialogue, plus far more Batman... more
