| 2. Stan Lee and the Rise and Fall of the American Comic Book |
|
By: Jordan Raphael, Tom Spurgeon Publisher: Chicago Review Press September 01, 2004
This is an intruiging narrative of Stan Lee's career & his influence on the American comic book industry. The title is a bit of an oversimplification, the industry went through many business cycles of highs & lows over the twentieth century. Marvel went from an IPO, bankruptcy, & than an unexpected resurgence in the past decade or two.
The author gives you a not so surprisingly... more

| 3. Marvel Visionaries: Stan Lee |
|
By: Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, John Romita, Steve Ditko Publisher: Marvel Comics February 09, 2005
Even if you're not a huge Stan Lee fan, this is a must-have to get a good sense of how comics have evolved into what they are today. This collection gives you a good sampling from throughout Stan's career and while he may not be the best writer when compared to people working today, he helped create a mythological universe in Marvel that other companies soon followed. It would be many years until another... more

| 4. Stan's Soapbox: The Collection |
|
By: Stan Lee Publisher: The Hero Initiative December 03, 2008
While I loved reading Stan's old Soapboxes (and that is definitely what was advertised), I think I would have preferred a different presentation - perhaps reprintings of Stan's Bullpen Bulletins pages over the years. Seeing it all retyped in nice new fonts as a series of essays, it's okay, but there's something about seeing the original thing on every page.
Still, very cool that this was... more

| 6. How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way |
|
By: Stan Lee, John Buscema Publisher: Fireside September 14, 1984
Probably one of the best books on comics for the beginner. Great simple overview, and awesome dynamic art examples, and unlike many of the "How to draw comics" books out there, it's done by comic book pros! Some other great books to try after, also by comic pros...

| 9. Tales to Astonish: Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and the American Comic Book Revolution |
|
By: Ronin Ro Publisher: Bloomsbury USA June 16, 2005
It's a breezy book that suffers from some glaring editing problems. Ronin describes Kirby's Army service with some nice stories, but the author also mentions that Kirby returned to the USA in 1943 - even though Kirby landed at Normandy 10 days after D-Day, which places the King in Europe in June 1944. Ronin's description of the National/Fawcett lawsuit implies that settlement was reached in the mid... more

| 10. Just Imagine Stan Lee Creating the DC Universe - Book 3 |
|
By: Stan Lee Publisher: DC Comics July 01, 2004
I'm not much of a DC fan and I am a big fan of Marvel, so I thought that this would be interesting, getting to see Stan Lee "create" the classic DC characters. And it was interesting if not great. I think he did a great job with Batman, though he's the one DC character that needs no tweaking. The Wonder Woman story was pretty interesting, though not something I'd want to see a whole lot of (though... more
