By: Jeff Smith Publisher: DC Comics March 10, 2009
This collection of the 4-issue mini-series is highly enjoyable. The story retells Billy Batson's transformation to Captain Marvel in a modern-day setting, and puts Sivana at the head of the Dept. Of Homeland Security. Initially I was put off by how young Billy and his sister, Mary, were drawn, but it ends up working out well for the story. The art is colorful, the plot simplistic, and the writing... more

By: Jerry Ordway Publisher: DC Comics May 01, 1995
`Power of Shazam' is a truly unique piece of art. This short graphic novel features a young, muscular, Fred MacMurry lookalike fighting a young, muscular, Boris Karloff lookalike, with results that are thrilling and wondrous as opposed to ridiculous. The success of this peculiar narrative form in this case is due to the virtuosity of artist/writer Jerry Ordway and the fact that the comic strip is... more

By: Denny O'Neil, E. Nelson Bridwell, Elliot S. Maggin, C.C. Beck, Kurt Schaffenberger, Dave Cockrum, Dick Giordano Publisher: DC Comics December 06, 2006
There was a time in the 1940's when "Captain Marvel" ("The World's MIghtiest Mortal") was once the even more popular than "Superman," out selling the "Mand of Steel."
This did not make the publishers of DC Comics, Harry Donnenfeld and Jack Leibowitz, happy. DC Comics took Fawcett Publications who plublished "Captain Marvel" to court claiming that Captain Marvel was an infringement of... more

|
By: Paul Dini, Alex Ross Publisher: DC Comics December 01, 2000
Within the first 10 pages of this very short story we see Captain Marvel telling a group of sick children how he took muzzled grizzly bears and threw them up in the air and juggled them as part of a circus act all to the kids great amusment. I guess the Captain's compassion only extends so far. The sick kids in the story are bringing tears to readers eyes at the same time they gloss over other forms... more

By: Judd Winick Publisher: DC Comics May 01, 2006
Ever since I was a child in the 70s, I have loved Captain Marvel/Shazam, but he has always been in the shadow of the Big S! A meeting of these two have always been like two world champion Superbowl teams meeting in a head to head battle. Though past issues have always wanted to see the two guys battle, it is better to see the two equally admire and aid each other. This reintroduction of their first... more

| 7. Trials of Shazam: Volume 1 |
|
By: Judd Winick, Howard Porter Publisher: DC Comics June 06, 2007
This really was an abomination of an idea that is an absolute insult to the characters involved, as well as to the fans who have faithfully followed these characters over the years. This misguided reinvention of the Captain Marvel franchise so completely misses the mark on what makes the characters and the world they inhabit so unique and enjoyable. Instead of embracing these characters' uniqueness... more

|
By: DC Comics Publisher: DC Comics July 01, 1999
Like its predecessor, this volume is an excellent look into the history of the original Captain Marvel. By saying the magic word "Shazam," boy reporter Bill Batson is transformed into the world's mightiest mortal. In this book, Captain Marvel battles aliens, robots, vampires and a fellow defender of justice who has fallen under mind control.
The last story in this book is where we start... more

By: Otto Binder, C.C. Beck, Various Publisher: DC Comics September 27, 2006
Great Mac Raboy art...BUT, all the stories, except the last one...are Captain Marvel, Jr. ones. In the last story...the "origin" of Mary Marvel, all 3 appear. Other than that story, no Mary Marvel, No Big Red Cheese and no Marvel Family stories. So, if you like Captain Marvel, Jr., this book is for you. If you want the Marvel Family, or Cap, or Mary Marvel...look elsewhere... more
