| 1. The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes |
| By: Neil Gaiman Publisher: Vertigo December 07, 1993
The Sandman series is a remarkable set of graphic novels for adult readers. "Preludes and Nocturnes" sets the stage for the series in Neil Gaiman's uniquely creative style. In addition to his own expansive imagination, he draws upon a wide range of mythological allusions to create a new mythology that is every bit as meaningful and self-contained as any "real" mythology such as Judean-Christian... more

I received the book quickly and in great condition. My son and I were happy with the purchase... more

| | 3. The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll's House |
| By: Neil Gaiman, Malcolm Jones III, Mike Dringenberg, Michael Zulli, Clive Barker Publisher: Vertigo September 01, 1991
Having established the basis for his world in The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes, Gaiman starts to stretch his wings a little, introducing us to more inhabitants of Morpheus's strange world, including some of his siblings, his servants (of a sort), and waking nightmares like The Corinthian. Gaiman ties it all together in a fascinating arc involving a young girl descended from a minor character... more

| | 4. The Sandman Vol. 3: Dream Country |
| By: Neil Gaiman, Malcolm Jones III, Charles Vess, Steve Erickson Publisher: Vertigo September 24, 1991
Taking a break after the sweeping grandeur of The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll's House, Gaiman creates what is essentially a short story collection, allowing him to play with different ideas and themes within the boundaries of his intricate mythology. As with any short story collection, some of the four stand out more than others, but it's rare to find a collection where none of the pieces truly misfire... more

| | 5. The Sandman Vol. 4: Season of Mists |
| By: Neil Gaiman, Neil Gaiman, Kelley Jones, Harlan Ellison, Mike Dringenberg Publisher: Vertigo January 04, 1994
This work represents a return to coherent narrative, which I really appreciate. Volume Three was great, but it was a collection of stories, of dreams, rather than what I was expecting. Volume Four presents Gaiman back at the loom, weaving a host of Gods and Endless into several stunning chapters. I really enjoyed this thoughtful, engrossing work. ... more

| | 6. The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You |
| By: Neil Gaiman, Bryan Talbot, George Pratt, Stan Woch Publisher: Vertigo September 03, 1993
I can't help but think of The Maxx Volume 1 (Wildstorm/DC Comics)) as I read A Game of You - after all, both entail the stories of young women pulled into their fantasy world and the play between the two, complete with heroes, princess fantasies, and a desire to be something else, something more. Of course, whereas The Maxx's fantasy world was a more direct window into Julie's psyche, Gaiman's dream... more

| | 7. The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 4 |
| By: Neil Gaiman Publisher: Vertigo November 11, 2008
I give the story 5 out of 5 stars, however, the quality of the books themselves is wanting: All four volumes came to me inside their sleeves and shrink wrapped, yet there was slight scuffs to the covers! Also, volume four had one page folded over and miscut. For books that cost $99 each, there should have been more attention to detail/quality control. One last thing, although the story is one... more

| | 8. The Sandman Vol. 6: Fables and Reflections |
| By: Neil Gaiman Publisher: Vertigo January 04, 1994
Another collection of short stories in The Sandman universe, and while the results aren't as consistently strong as those in The Sandman Vol. 3: Dream Country, the high points are incredibly high. The two best stories bookend the novel. After a short introductory piece, "Three Septembers and a January" opens the novel, detailing the life of the only Emperor of America, with Gaiman crafting what could... more

| | 9. The Sandman Vol. 7: Brief Lives |
| By: Neil Gaiman, Jill Thompson, Vince Locke, Peter Straub Publisher: Vertigo January 01, 1995
I commented when I read The Sandman Vol. 6: Fables and Reflections that a good deal of it felt like setup for something later to come. Turns out, I was right...but did the payoff ever merit the time it took. Brief Lives is in many ways the simplest Sandman story to date, revolving around Dream and Delirium's quest to find their brother Destruction, who abandoned his duties many centuries ago. And yet... more

| | 10. The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 3 |
| By: Neil Gaiman Publisher: Vertigo June 17, 2008
If you've got the Sandman books already, it is worth your money to replace them with the Absolute edition volumes. With the pages being so much larger, it is much easier to pick up the tiny details that you may have missed in the smaller prints. The colors are so much more vibrant on the big glossy pages that it's almost like seeing it for the first time again. Plus which, the book's hefty weight feels... more
