| | 2. The Iliad (Marvel Illustrated) |
| From: Marvel Comics Publisher: Marvel Comics November 26, 2008
With words by the incomparable Roy Thomas and artwork by Miguel Angel Sepulvedra, Marvel Illustrated has brought to life the full complexity of Homer's Iliad. The Marvel Illustrated version is uncompromising, ranging from Olympus' heights to the sea's depths as it follows the fortunes of the Greeks and the Trojans "far on the ringing plains of windy Troy."
Marvel gives us no dummied-down... more

| | 3. Conan: The Ultimate Guide to the World's Most Savage Barbarian |
| By: Roy Thomas Publisher: DK Publishing September 04, 2006
Wanna know what a cheapo I am? Every month or so I head off to the local bookstore chain and sift through the fantasy section. If there are any art or picture books I'm unfamiliar with, I sit in one of their chairs and slowly flip through the whole thing. This way I get to experience the best fantasy art without going broke.
There are, however, a few books that are so rich, so full... more

| | 4. H.P. Lovecraft's Miskatonic Project: Bride Of Dagon (Volume 1) |
| By: Mark Ellis, Roy Thomas, RJM Loccifier Publisher: Transfuzion Publishing April 03, 2009
The Miskatonic Project: The Bride of Dagon is the latest compilation in graphic novel form by the enterprising Transfuzion Publishing. It lists for $15.99, undiscounted by Amazon, for a 100 page issue, pretty much standard value for the money for a graphic novel. I believe the original comics dated from the early 1990s, but there was no note on the origins of the comics so I am guessing. I actually... more

"All Star Comics Companon, Volume 1" is a great book. Roy Thomas gives the complete history of the All Star Comics comic book series. Not only does he give the complete story of the complete run of "The Justice Society of America" series in :All Star Comics," but also continues on to when the "Justice Society of America" series was canceled and was replaced first by a series of funny comic book characters... more

| | 6. The Barry Windsor-Smith Conan Archives Volume 1 |
| By: Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor-Smith Publisher: Dark Horse March 03, 2010
I have a confession to make. For the longest time, I thought Barry Smith, who did some random Marvel work along with the amazing Conan comics from the 70s, and Barry Windsor-Smith, whose elegant and stylish artwork appeared on so many series throughout the 80s and 90s, were two separate people.
In fact, I always assumed they had a father/son John Adams/John Quincy Adams-type of thing... more

| | 8. The Picture of Dorian Gray (Marvel Illustrated) |
| By: Oscar Wilde, Roy Thomas, Sebastian Fiumara Publisher: Marvel Comics April 08, 2009
I bought the Marvel graphic novel of The Picture of Dorian Gray. I had to buy it on amazon because the nearest Barns and Nobel has a very small and somewhat lacking graphic novel section. The Marvel graphic noel is very nice.
I also bought a graphic novel version from Sterling press. I wasn't sure which one I'd prefer.
Well, after looking at... more

| | 9. Treasure Island (Marvel Illustrated) |
| By: Roy Thomas Publisher: Marvel Comics April 09, 2008
Marvel Comics has a new series of hardcover graphic novel adaptations of some classic books. Being a fan of Robert Louis Stevenson I picked up Treasure Island. The story is adapted by Roy Thomas, a heavy-weight in the comics world (Conan, X-Men, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, etc..) and line drawings by Mario Gully. Overall I found it a slick professional production and loyal to the original plot. There... more

| | 10. Avengers: Galactic Storm, Vol. 2 (v. 2) |
| By: Len Kaminski, Tom DeFalco, Mark Gruenwald, Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, Gerard Jones, Bob Harras, Paul Ryan, Pat Olliffe, Rik Levins, Dave Ross, Rurik Tyler, Jeff Johnson, Stephen B. Jones, Steve Epting, Greg Capullo, Craig Brasfield, John Czop, Darren Auck, Dave Simons Publisher: Marvel Comics December 27, 2006
Having read some of the original issues when this series first came out in the early 90s, I decided to pick up the assembled stories in the 2 Galactic Storm volumes... and now I wish I hadn't. Frankly, they're exactly what you'd expect from a 90s Marvel crossover- there's a loud of loud noise, mindless action and disjointed plot threads. I'm as big a fan of action and loud noise as the next comic book... more
