"Astro City: The Dark Age Book One" Written by Kurt Busiek Illustrated by Bret Anderson (DC Comics, 2009) ----------------------------------------------- I was a Marvel kid, but a friend of mine who's more of a DC fan turned me on to Kurt Busiek's "Astro City" series a while ago, and I have been continually impressed ever since.
This new volume is one of... more

| 2. Spider-Man Visionaries - Kurt Busiek, Vol. 1 (Vol 1) |
|
By: Kurt Busiek, Pat Olliffe Publisher: Marvel Comics August 30, 2006
I could be too picky, but something just ain't right with the trade paperback SPIDER-MAN VISIONARIES: KURT BUSIEK volume 1. Don't get me wrong - Kurt Busiek's work on the wall-crawler really shines. I haven't enjoyed reading Spider-Man this much in years, as Busiek does something I've been clamoring for for quite a while: travelling waaaaaay back in time to tell stories set during the original Spidey... more

| 3. ASTRO CITY: THE DARK AGE, BOOK 1 |
|
By: Kurt Busiek Publisher: WildStorm July 29, 2008
This is probably my least favorite Astro City story so far. For some reason, I don't care much about the interplay between the two main characters. The back story of the golden age Astro City heroes is always interesting, though. Even an ordinary Astro City story is better than most everything else out there... more

By: Kurt Busiek, Greg Ruth Publisher: Dark Horse June 29, 2008
Am I the only one who doesn't like the art in this book? Just something grates from the very beginning. I can understand stylistic differences but come on! However this could be just my personal preference. I like distinct, cool, filmic type artwork where i can really see what's going on and the artist knows his stuff. In this book the art seems hidden and indistinct as if drawn for a childrens... more

|
By: Kurt Busiek, Fabian Nicieza Publisher: DC Comics June 02, 2009
Wasn't even able to get through some pieces of this length work by Busiek. I went in with high expectations, and unlike some other reviews I actually found the art passable, although at times it wanes into cartoonish territory (many of Despero's sequences, for instance, look ridiculous). The writing and plot construction was the issue here.
For me, it had all the hallmarks of a disappointing... more

| 6. Life in the Big City (Astro City, Vol. 1) |
|
By: Kurt Busiek, Brent E. Anderson, Alex Ross Publisher: Wildstorm June 23, 1999
The writing here is decent, the drawings are precise. Astrocity appears to be a whole new take on superheroes. More so than your average angsty Spiderman with his daily money woes. The problem here appears with trying to create whole new personae, superpowers and costumes for each superhero and then craft a story around each. This would ensure a rich vein of new material to constantly draw upon and... more

| 8. So Smart in Their Fine Uniforms (Arrowsmith, Book 1) |
|
By: Kurt Busiek, Carlos Pacheco Publisher: Wildstorm August 01, 2004
Apart from my love for Carlos Pacheco's art, I see Arrowsmith as a step in the right direction when it comes to the graphic novel form. Where on one end we get the pamphlet superhero compilations, and on the other end we get the artsy fare, Arrowsmith sought to tell a sci-fi fantasy war story that's obviously well-researched and cleanly structured. And one that could stand on its own.
I... more

By: Kurt Busiek, Alex Ross Publisher: Marvel Comics January 20, 2010
Wizard gave this bad boy spot #2 on their best graphic novels of all time. I highly disagree, Marvels is better than DC: The New Frontier by a long shot. This novel is the most realistic superhero comic ever created. What would all of us puny humans have to say about all these superhero's destroying our property in fist fights? Regular Joe's don't usually have a huge appearance in superhero books... more

| 10. JLA/Avengers |
|
By: Kurt Busiek Publisher: DC Comics November 18, 2008
After the proposed project was delayed way back in the 1980's, the two major comicbook companies (DC & MARVEL) finally got their **** together 20+ years later, and the JLA/AVENGERS Cross-Over finally got off the ground. It was worth the wait because [they] made it into a "4-Issue Event" (in its initial release). Now it is published into trade paperback combining all four issues from the talents... more
