| 1. Alice |

Starring: Kristýna Kohoutová, Camilla Power Directed By: Jan Svankmajer April 11, 2000
I'm picky about my foreign films. Mostly, I don't care much for reading subtitles for 2hrs, but this one intrigued me. Surprisingly, this film doesn't have subtitles, there is very little dialog and it is dubbed over in English. I think that the director was counting on most of the audience to already be familiar with Louis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland stories. I love the animation, and while it... more

Starring: Andrea Arnold Directed By: Christopher Nolan, Lars Von Trier, Lynne Ramsay, Ridley Scott, Mathieu Kassovitz September 25, 2007
There is enough variety here that I can almost guarantee that everyone will find something essential to their collection. Reading the other customer reviews, I see that my preferences are so different that my naming them can only illustrate my point. I will name them anyway.
From the first disc, Roy Andersson's "World of Glory" and Lynne Ramsay's "Gasman" are what I would consider the... more

Starring: Maurizio Nichetti, Maurizio Micheli, Marialuisa Giovannini, Néstor Garay, Mirella Falco Directed By: Bruno Bozzetto February 03, 2004
I was buying one of her records the day Maria Callas died. I met my partner and he said: "What do we do?" I said: "Let's go see that new Italian animated movie." It was Allegro Non Troppo--and what impressed me the most was how it made mincemeat out of Disney's Fantasia (which I saw for the first time when I was 4, and to this day remains my all time Disney favorite). It is absolutely one of the... more

Starring: Barry Bostwick, Jennifer Drake, Eric Baugin, Jean Topart, Jean Valmont Directed By: René Laloux February 16, 1999
I rented this movie on Netflix and I didn't have any problems with the DVD. Its availablity on Netflix appears somewhat limited. It was removed from my queue once. I guess since it's a foreign film it's more obscure than it should be. Get your hands on this thing when you can.
Fantastic Planet is like an art film with an actual story. Everything about it is good, even the repetitive... more

This is perhaps one of the most sucessful movie adaptions to the Faust legend or play of all time and so far the most honest I have ever seen. 'But this IS Hell'says Mephistopheles of the world around the novice , who comes to the realization that even in glay or wood form , the demons of the grimoire turned Opus Cabalisticum Et Theosophicum can be quite real and quite terrifying , capable of... more

"Hedgehog in the Fog" is the most magical piece of animation I've ever been privileged to witness. Eastern European animation in the late '60s and 70's shares a vision of the world that can be dark, yet soulful and deeply courageous. "Hedgehog in the Fog" evokes the same sense of magic that many of us experienced as young children. Vince Bonavoglia's depiction of this 10 minute short as "dreary" and... more

Starring: Petr Meissel, Gabriela Wilhelmová, Barbora Hrzánová, Anna Wetlinská, Jirí Lábus Directed By: Jan Svankmajer April 10, 2000
This was my first Jan Svankmajer film which I bought not really knowing what to expect. I loved it but please be advised that this is not for everyone. The movie has music but no spoken words... but don't let that deter you- actions speak louder then words. There is one character in the movie whose sexually deviant actions are highlighted by dramatic opera music- which makes it hilarious. ALso be sure... more
