| | 2. The Battle of Algiers - Criterion Collection |
| Starring: Brahim Hadjadj, Jean Martin, Yacef Saadi, Samia Kerbash, Ugo Paletti Directed By: Gillo Pontecorvo October 12, 2004
La battaglia di Algeri - The Battle for Algeria (1966) from Director Gillo Pontecorvo, is a monumental achievement, an epic that leaves no stone unturned, no taboo unexposed, no analytical possibility unconsidered, no emotion unfelt. A like this one can change lives, can wake spectators from their political doldrums.
This work is fascinating for those having a limited... more

| | 3. Encounter Point |
| Directed By: Ronit Avni & Julia Bacha July 31, 2007
The scenes with the young Palestinian men were riveting as they argued with each other over exchanging their honor for reconciliation. It reminded me of our human need to say our suffering and death are worthy no matter what the circumstance. These guys wanted to be noble and admired in the face of losing or they would rather die. Our nation is the same. Remember Kissenger's lame proclamation after... more

| | 4. Z |
| Starring: Yves Montand, Irene Papas, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Jacques Perrin, Charles Denner Directed By: Costa-Gavras July 02, 2002
I have been a fan of this film since I first saw it as a teenager, even got the sound track on record then, and still have. However as I recall, back in 69, the film was dubbed into English, which made it easier to follow. (also another fave is "That Man From Rio" also dubbed for the US, NOT on Criterion, or any US DVDs yet), so since the spoken language was a dubbed English, a better connection was... more

| | 5. Bab'aziz: The Prince Who Contemplated His Soul |
| Starring: Golshifteh Farahani, Hossein Panahi, Parviz Shahinkhou, Maryam Hamid, Nessim Kahloul Directed By: Nacer Khemir December 16, 2008
I watched tis movie on a blizzard day, the perfect day for a movie like this. From the beginning you are transported to another place, time and exotic surroundings... there are no words to describe the feelings that this movie provoked in me. The whole story is a sweet one, the relationship between grandpa and the girl is simply adorable, the tales are magic and full of colours and arabic sounds... more

| | 6. Rana's Wedding |
| Starring: Bushra Karaman, Clara Khoury, Khalifa Natour, Ismael Dabbag, Walid Abed Elsalam Directed By: Hany Abu-Assad December 11, 2007
The romantic "plot" was simply a thin veil for the anti-Israeli propaganda. Showing how roadblocks affect the daily life of Palestinians, I understand. Portraying the Israelis as cruel oppressors and only as such, without the context of history, the answer of what came first- palestinian violence or Israeli oppression- is a gross misrepresentation of reality. There is no doubt that the position of... more

| | 7. Until When... |
| Directed By: Dahna Abourahme November 29, 2005
A very well-presented documentary on the Palestinian issue through various refuge camp inhabitants of varying ages. It is a shame that the only way someone would stumble across this movie is if they were specifically looking for something on this issue...and then, of course, wanted to know/understand a well-rounded view of the Palestinian situation.
A phenomenal film that I wish could... more

| | 8. Color of Olives, The |
| Directed By: Carolina Rivas January 23, 2007
An empty and static film in which nothing much really happens. Unless you enjoy watching a large Arab family caught up in a militarized zone in which their land was confiscated and their life routine disrupted by unfeeling soldiers--day after day after endless day. Gives none of the political context and controversies leading up to this unfortunate situation. Some kind of basic background story would... more

| | 9. Viva La'ldjerie |
| Starring: Nadia Kaci, Jalil Naciri, Kamel Abdeli, Lubna Azabal, Biyouna Directed By: Nadir Mokneche January 01, 2005
Recently, I watched several films dealing with the issues of the Middle East and North Africa, among them Le Grand Voyage, Rachida, Daughter of Keltoum, The Willow Tree, The Syrian Bride, each one is very different. Viva Laldjerie is not the best but probably the most modern and ambitious of them all. It is exquisitely made, you can see the hand of a master at work. There is a lot going on in terms... more

| | 10. The Dove's Lost Necklace |
| Directed By: Nacer Khemir March 25, 2008
The second part of Nacer Khemir's Desert Trilogy is more satisfying than the first instalment "Wanderer's of the Desert". It's more colourful than it's predecessor and easier to follow. The arabic spoken is classical as opposed to the strong Tunisian accent of Wanderers. I think that non-arabs might find the love sick student a bit over the top but it makes lots of sense in a Middle Eastern context... more
