| 1. Into the Woods |
|
Starring: Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, Chip Zien, Tom Aldredge, Robert Westenberg Directed By: James Lapine August 27, 1997
There's a lot right with this musical, and with this particular production. Weaving all the stories together (Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Rapunzel) and introducing proletariet characters in the Baker and his Wife, catchy music. For Sondheim, catchy is rare. Beautiful is to be expected, but not catchy.
The story has a great start: get all the couples together in the first act and... more

|
Starring: Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, David Bedella Directed By: Hugh Wooldridge June 16, 2009
Chess has always been a favorite musical and this performance was breathtaking. Both sensational and finely crafted, this is, in my opinion, a performance of the century. Josh Groban, in particular is close to perfect as the Russian chess competitor - he dosen't miss a beat and his pathos is right on target.
I'm used to the old 2 disk LP so some of the performers didn't seem to fit into... more

|
Starring: Kevin Kline, George Rose, Linda Ronstadt, Rex Smith, Patricia Routledge Directed By: Joshua White, Wilford Leach October 22, 2002
This Broadway rendition of Pirates made in Central Park (80's) is probably the best performance I've seen with this cast. I was hoping to find the movie with the same cast (Angela Landsbury is in the movie as the maid), but this copy will have to do until it is out on DVD. The quality is poor in places, but the music, singing, and acting is the best ever! It's worth the purchase! Kevin... more
