This is a depressing, largely nonjudgmental film about a family which probably would be called trailer trash if they lived in America instead of Iceland. It's the Fifties, and Devil's Island is the name of a former U. S. military base near Reykjavik the Americans have abandoned. This movie was described by the Chicago Tribune as "Hilarious and Rowdy! Lurid and Sexy" The New York Times called it "An Amusing Comedy". Wouldn't you think that means it should be funny? Instead, it is a horrid tragedy with not a single character having any redeeming value. They are all full of greed, lust and lies. The language was horrible, and quite frankly, I've never found arson and incest... more
