| | 2. Mr. Skeffington |
| Starring: Bette Davis, Claude Rains, Walter Abel, George Coulouris, Richard Waring Directed By: Vincent Sherman June 14, 2005
Features:- Whose face ravaged, grotesque is in the mirror? Surely it's not that of Fanny Skeffington, the prettiest woman in New York. Fanny always used her beauty to manipulate her way through life. She's encouraged dozens of suitors, even after her marriage. But now diphtheria has robbed her of her only attribute. And without her looks, she's lost. Bette Davis earned her eighth Best Actress Oscar nominatio
Other reviewers have done a good job of sizing up the plot of the film, so I am simply going to add BUY IT! You will not regret it. The film certainly has some light-hearted moments, but there are other scenes that will tear your heart out. Keep the Kleenex handy. It's so sad that Hollywood doesn't produce films of this caliber anymore... more

| Starring: Sylvia Sidney, Spencer Tracy, Walter Abel, Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal Directed By: Arthur Hiller, Elia Kazan, Fritz Lang, John Sturges, Mervyn LeRoy May 10, 2005
Features:- Bad Day At Black Rock: Folks In Black Rock have their own way of welcoming mysterious, one-armed stranger John J. Macreedy. He's welcome to leave. Or they'll make sure he leaves in a pine box. Blackboard Jungle Richard Dadier is a man eager to make a difference. Or, some might say, he's a believer in lost causes. Dadier is a new teacher at inner-city North Manual High. Racial and
I do not want to sound repetitive, as there are many helpful reviews and I feel I can't sum up the films better than many other reviews. I merely want to add another positive review and say that every film in this box set is a masterpiece of cinema. My favourite of the bunch is Otto Preminger's Advise & Consent and I would recommend that the most.
The films are all great! ... more

| | 4. Wake Island |
| Starring: Brian Donlevy, Robert Preston, Macdonald Carey, William Bendix, Albert Dekker Directed By: John Farrow May 25, 2004
A great movie for the 1940's. Lots of propaganda though, but America needed it then. Like my parents said of that era, "we knew we had to win, because if we didn't, we would have lost our country." ... more

| | 6. 13 Rue Madeleine |
| Starring: James Cagney, Annabella, Richard Conte, Frank Latimore, Walter Abel Directed By: Henry Hathaway May 20, 2003
13 Rue Madeline(1947) is one of the many spy films produced after the war detailing the heroic efforts of the OSS and there ilk. This one is designed like a docu-Drama with one of the lamest of 40s and 50s devices: the overuse of a monotone narrator to explain the plot. It does not help to include such a meandering voice on an already leisurely paced film and it keeps this film strictly as a historical... more

| | 7. Going My Way/Holiday Inn |
| Starring: Bing Crosby, Barry Fitzgerald, Fred Astaire, Frank McHugh, James Brown Directed By: Leo McCarey, Mark Sandrich October 09, 2001
These are good movies, though the blackface routine I think should have been omitted from the movie Holiday Inn. The dvd itself played well and was in good condition, but I would have preferred a copy that left out the blackface segment that was offensive, though it was part of the original film. I did not know about that part before I purchased it. Holiday Inn overall was excellent and entertaining... more

| | 8. Fury |
| Starring: Sylvia Sidney, Spencer Tracy, Walter Abel, Bruce Cabot, Edward Ellis Directed By: Fritz Lang May 10, 2005
The Bottom Line:
A twisted and incredibly interesting film about an ordinary man (you know he's ordinary because he's played by Spencer Tracy) who is seemingly roasted alive by an angry lynch mob when he's accused of a crime on the basis of circumstantial evidence, but manages to survive and ends up cold-bloodedly orchestrating the trial of his would-be murderers; an unequivocally great... more

| | 9. Tales of Tomorrow: Collection One |
| Starring: Leslie Nielsen, Theo Goetz, Cameron Prud'Homme, Olive Deering, Edith Fellows Directed By: Franklin J. Schaffner September 07, 2004
Tales of Tomorrow is very much like The Twilight Zone, but pre-dates it by several years. In the 50s special effects were just about nonexistant, but most of the stories and plots were good and the acting was generally at least decent. And that really counts for a lot more than all the flash/bang special effects you will ever see. It`s not as good as The Twilight Zone or The Outer... more

| | 10. So This Is Love |
| Starring: Kathryn Grayson, Merv Griffin, Joan Weldon, Walter Abel Directed By: Gordon Douglas June 22, 2009
I guess if you're a Grayson fan this movie is pretty good. But I can't stand her quavery voice. If you really want to know about Grace Moore, get HER movies...When You're in Love (with Cary Grant), New Moon with Tibbett, and The King Steps Out. I have all of them and I consider these 3 the best. There are clips from these on Youtube.
Moore spent 8 years on broadway before opera. ... more
