| 1. Hitler's War (War That Came Early) |
|
By: Harry Turtledove Publisher: Tantor Media November 10, 2009
For many years, Harry Turtledove has been touted as the master of alternate history. At least, the blurbs on his book says so. Unfortunately, in the case of "Hitler's War", they refer to his earlier work. I've read and enjoyed many of his books (even as far back as when he wrote as "Eric Iverson"), but this one was a bit of a let-down. The first in what appears to be a new series ("The War That Came... more

By: Edward L. Ferman Publisher: Random House Value Publishing October 21, 1996
This is one of the strongest in the long-running "Best from F&SF" series. This one collects the editors' picks from 1994-1998, which was mostly the Kristine Kathryn Rusch era. The Table of Contents is above, just before the "Search inside this book" box. 21 stories, and hardly a weak one in the bunch. Six won major awards (Hugo, Nebula, and/or World Fantasy awards. My favorites include Bruce Sterling's... more

| 6. The Time Machine |
|
By: H. G. Wells Publisher: Coffeetown Press March 26, 2008
THE TIME MACHINE, despite certain obvious faults of imagination and style, is a brilliant fantasy: and it affords a valuable picture of the young Wells looking at the world, with his normal eyes, and finding it, more particularly, incomplete. At the age of twenty-seven or so, he has freed himself very completely from the bonds of conventional thought, and is prepared to examine, and to present life... more

(Probably 3.5 stars, but those 1 star reviews need a counterweight!)
As a teenager, I read and enjoyed Jules Verne's obscure novel To the Sun/Off on a Comet. (The translation I read was divided into two volumes.) I sort of thought no one else had ever read it, but of course some other people had. One of those people is Adam Roberts. And now Roberts has produced this curious riff on... more

| 10. Dying Inside |
|
By: Robert Silverberg Publisher: Ibooks 2002-03
With considerable respect, I must say that some of Silverberg's stuff seems to go nowhere, with no discernible point. This is not one of those, and is worth every penny you pay for it. "Dying Inside" is a truly enjoyable read. I would also recommend "Shadrach in the Furnace" and "Hawksbill Station," for those who enjoy his more straight-forward storytelling. ... more
